question about moving a character with patterns to a new town

So, we got a second copy of ACNL today for my husband, and we would like to move his character over with all his items and bells to be the mayor of the new town. The only problem is that his character is holding a bunch of my path designs which are already laid out throughout the town. I don't mind re-pathing the areas that will inevitably get removed, but I do want to make sure the patterns themselves don't get deleted when he moves. Is there a place he can save the patterns where they won't disappear when he leaves? For example, can he put those patterns on the mannequins at able and have them still be there when his character is gone for me to then use as a new character? Can I save them with Mable and then access them as my mayor or another character?
