question about friending villagers

im trying to friend all of my villagers in new horizons. one of the villagers likes the iconic style, but theres no information about iconic clothing or furniture online that i can find. so my question is, what do i gift this villager to make them happy? the villager is Avery and he has a desert/clay styled theme to his home. i gave him the mini cactus but he didnt seem enthused about it at all!
do the villagers give you a gift back if they enjoy what youve given them? ive had them give me things, and not give me things afterwards so im also wondering about this.

Whether or not they give you a gift back depends on the value of the gift you give them. Here is a link to a useful resource for how friendship works in the game: Ultimate Friendship Guide

With regard to clothes, villagers have one or two favorites styles and one or two favorite colors. Avery's style is simple or gorgeous and his favorite colors are orange and brown. For them to like an item, it usually only needs to match one of the parameters I think.

Here's a good resource for what clothes each villager likes: Villager Gift Finder (after you input your villager, keep scrolling until it shows all the items)

(Worth noting the Villager Gift Finder doesn't take gender into account so it will show all clothes in that color and style regardless if they are associated with male or female villagers)

Also I'd recommend going to Harv's Island to have your villagers try on clothes. Sometimes all the clothes that fit their preferences don't always look great on them and vice versa - sometimes there are clothes outside of their preferences that do look good on them.

I'm not sure all this information is still 100% accurate after updates and what not, but most of it should be, I think.

thank you so much! thats very helpful! i had read that Averys style was gorgeous *in new leaf*, but you wouldnt know it from his house At All in new horizons. his house looks as though his tastes are western...everything in his home is made of clay and stone. even his wallpaper is desert! i hadnt thought of going to harvs island to find out so thanks again! the villager gift finder doesnt work on my computer

Ah yeah, I'm not sure what code the Villager Gift Finder is built on but sometimes it displays in odd ways. This site does a similar thing but you have to type the item in and it doesn't show pictures: favchecker

I think there are some unofficial ACNH apps (free or maybe some others for a couple bucks) that have similar data within them but I'm not sure how accurate they are.
