Purposely getting 2nd/3rd place in Bug-Off

Has anyone tried to do this? I tried to do it today to get the silver or bronze trophy, but it came back to bite me in the backside when I didn't even place. I had a bunch of island bugs in my basket I could've used, too...

Either you get first or you go home. Naw. Never tried to do that. Don't care much about silver and bronze trophies.

I finally got the bronze trophy today! Just catch like a 50 point bug early in the day and just forget about the competition. Now if I could get a gold trophy without cheating by catching a rare bug on the island, that would make my day.

I always go for gold but I have come in second a few times. I never remember to go to the ceremony though. And that's even if I feel like participating. at all.

missed out on bronze because of Nat's stupid arbitrary point system (constantly resetting if too many things were low value or if something jumped too high too fast, since I was working to get the furniture as well)

I usually go for gold or nothing, but eventually I will try to get the others for the sake of collecting.

I've been trying to do this as well, and it is inordinately difficult. The point differences between the bugs that the villagers catch is always so small, and Nat's point assignment is basically random (Chip's is a little more fair). I tried to do this today, and none of my villagers even scored above 60. Literally the first butterfly I caught for the day beat everyone.

I figure that the easiest way to cheese this is to have at least 3 human characters in the town and have all of them turn in something ridiculous, like Birdwing Butterflies or Horned Elephants. Ideally, it will crush the competition, and you end up with all three of the trophies.

It wasn't on purpose but I caught a 40 point bug early in the competition, stopped for the rest of the day, and then got second place.

I've tried getting the silver or bronze trophies and all I can say is, it's harder than getting gold!

I have two characters, I planned on having my mayor be in first since she got silver last time, but my alt ended up beating her

I tried casually yesterday for the silver bug trophy (last one I needed for catalog), and as it turned out I got it! ^^ Beat third place first, then got 2nd place with an agrias butterfly I think and stopped there. Guess I got lucky.

...I've done this, but it's only because I feel so weird WINNING EVERYTHING all the time.

It's not even a competition if you can just- crush their efforts with a trip to the island. sgkjlsdkgj i even send congratulation letters afterwards

I have all three trophies, multiple gold and one each of the silver and bronze. I used my mayor and two of my alt characters to get them, same for the fishing trophies.

I won yesterday by catching that huge green butterfly. Didn't even try though xd. Moe was second place, wish I hadn't win so he could get the first place ( I even sold the trophy afterwards). (he's won before though). I don't usually care about these events but the villagers always get sad when I don't play with them.
