Do you care about proper grammar? I honestly do care about grammar very much. Using proper grammar is a must for me when I am texting, typing, and speaking.

Yes, I literally just created a thread about speaking the word ?LOL.? I realize it?s kind of ironic for someone to care about grammar when they are okay with saying ?LOL? in real life. I think everyone is aware I am a weird individual, but aren?t we all? I barely even type ?LOL? honestly. Yes, I just typed it three times in this post.

I never use text speak. I try to avoid acronyms at all costs. Instead of typing ?TBT,? I prefer to type ?The Bell Tree.?

Does improper grammar or text speak bother you? Would you refuse to talk with someone if they ?tlk?d lik dis?? Does the way someone types not bother you?

I don't mind if people use short forms and whatnot as long as I can understand what they're saying. Personally I use proper grammar everywhere except when I'm messaging someone I'm really close with, and even then whether or not I use proper grammar depends on whether or not they use proper grammar.

it doesnt bother me at all bc to me it seems pointless. im generally annoyed regarding those who look down on slang and txt speak type things, because its a) a natural progression of language as we adapt to technology and the instantaneous nature of everything and b) it isnt "stupid." using shortenings (i;e because --> bc) makes sense, and it makes sense to most everyone, except for people who don't bother to even try to learn/tolerate text speak, which brings me to c) at this point in society, understanding txt speak is a useful skill. ive seen many articles trying to teach parents text speak so they can understand what their kids are saying online. it's more useful and far more socially applicable than cursive at this point in society.

i also enjoy the tone it portrays. i used to be a stickler for perfect syntax, but then i felt, to put it frankly, that i sounded like i had a stick up my ass. i will use proper syntax/grammar when communicating with a boss or teacher or other authority, but when im here on this forum, im casual. to me, improper syntax conveys a very casual tone that i feel is appropriate in most online interaction. i even go through the effort of turning off all grammar correction every time i get a new phone because i can do it myself if i need it and most of the time i dont.

so to summarize, no i dont care about proper grammar/syntax in a casual setting. i only really care about it when talking to authorities or writing a paper.

I’m definitely not looking down on anyone who does it. It’s just annoying when literally every word in the sentence is abbreviated. That can get irritating. I wouldn’t be rude to someone who uses text speak, but it is not my thing either. I prefer to type the correct way, using proper grammar. It’s a personal preference at this point what people prefer.

TBH, I used to be REALLY into using proper grammar, even in super casual online social situations, to the point where I would even correct my friends' grammar, but IDK, as I got older, I guess I just stopped caring as much. I guess it just started feeling a little too snobby and "elite" to care about grammatical issues in non-formal situations. (Not saying that it's elitist to use proper grammar in your own writing if you like to, but I was literally at the point where I would go out of my way to correct other peoples' grammar even if I could fully understand what they were trying to say, and acted like improper grammar was almost immoral rather than just grammatically incorrect, which IMO is pretty snobby and elitist) Sometimes it's fun or feels more expressive to bend the rules when you don't really have a tone of voice on the internet, little weird quirks or trademarks in the way you type things where your friends can tell your writing apart from other forms of writing. I actually have a pretty specific way of typing to my best friend that I'd never really type to anyone else, and it sorta makes me feel special that our conversations have a trademark style to them. I still try to use as correct of grammar as I can in a formal situation, but if I'm just chatting with my friends, sometimes it's fun or convenient to bend the rules. I tend to have a slightly more formal way of typing in forums, even though it's a pretty casual situation, just because I don't want to be confusing, where as my close friends are more used to any abnormal and grammatically incorrect typing styles I may have.

Basically, I use varying levels of grammatical correctness depending on the situation, and as long as I can understand what someone is saying, I'm not really too bothered if they miss some grammatical rules. I think being into correct grammar is totally fine, but I also don't like pressuring others to use it if it's not a formal situation where grammatical incorrectness could lead to legal issues or really major misinformation or whatnot.

I do my best to use correct grammar myself all the time, no matter the setting, but I don’t care one bit how other people present themselves online or in real life. It’s up to them.

When it comes to myself I always try to have proper grammar. However, I'm not that bothered if someone else's is incorrect. Unless they are representing me or something I own, it's not like it really affects me.

^This. As long as they actually put effort, and if they try writing properly check their spelling and stuff I'm fine. When people "purposely" misuse then/than etc. or just misspell word like "compleate" or stuff then I just get annoyed.

But yeah I use brb, lol, omg and stuff like that all the time unless I'm writing to authorities and such...

When it comes to English it's my 2nd language so I try to not care too much... but when people can't check then/than or how to actually spell "complete" and just write weird forms I'm just.. no try again.

To add onto this, I noticed in the past couple years that people would use “Your” for “You’re” and vice versa, and also incorrectly use “There/Their/They’re”. The “Your” thing really bothers me because it totally messes up what someone is trying to say. It’s not, “Your feeling good,” it’s supposed to be “You’re feeling good”. Don’t spell it wrong on purpose. Geez, people.

EDIT: I mean, tbh, it’s so bad it makes the people sound like cavemen... and I see this in YouTube comments all the time .-.

It also annoys me when people use ?prolly? in place of ?probably. It is annoying when people say ?could of? or ?should of? instead of ?could have? and ?should have.? It annoys me when people purposely mix up then/than.

I think the could/should of/have is not common use unless you are a native English speaker.. I haven't seen much equivalents in other languages that have similar mix-ups and to be honest it doesn't make any sense anyway, if you get what I mean. Yeah, the purpose mix up is more annoying, then/than are two very different words and uses.

I used to care a lot but now I'm more relaxed in casual conversations, meaning I use more chatspeak like lmao and stuff. Though, I basically only use lmao and RIP these days.

I am trying to improve my vocabulary in general when it comes to my writing.

I've been in online school for a little over a year now, and it kills me to see my classmates' discussion posts filled with spelling and grammatical errors. Some people won't capitalize "I" and consistently use text speak. Every syllabus clearly states not to do this, but people do not seem to even try. Many times I have seen people write incomplete sentences. Sometimes I legitimately cannot understand what they mean. It is frustrating because we are supposed to be in a group discussion, so I want to respond to thoughtful posts. I don't mind if English is not their first language. It is usually obvious, and most people will mention that in their introduction. However, it is clear that many students refuse to proof read. College is expensive, and it kills me to have to read terrible posts repeatedly.

That aside, I don't mind if people abbreviate in texts or online. I don't know if any of you have come across this but, it kills me to hear people say "LOL" in verbal conversation.. It doesn't make sense. Also repeated use of fillers, such as "like", makes me cringe.

Okay that sentence surprised me. If your writing is so bad to the point of being unintelligible, what are you even doing in college?

Unfortunately, a lot of universities, especially in the US, are known as “party schools,” which may be the reason why some people are there when they should not be.

Thankfully, I have the privilege to go to a university where everyone takes their academics seriously. :D

Off topic, but I go to a very expensive uni (not trying to brag) and a lot of people here are party animals. It's insane, I had to work hard to get to where I am and they act like it was just handed to them smfh

It doesn't bother me when people use improper/bad grammar without correcting themselves, but it does give me insight on who they are...
