Hi folks!
I have a problem in Paint Tool Sai and I need your help, please!! :'>
Not sure if opening a thread like this is okay. If not, please tell me asap DX

Story:
Mewm-sensei sent me a tutorial for shading hair a while ago: http://kiramekirai.deviantart.com/art/Hair-shading-tutorial-320096168 and I already have issues in step 2. I asked her for help but she's very busy with the freebies and life and stuff, so I thought I should ask you as well! ;v;
Problem:
I made clean lineart and a base color layer. Above the base color layer I created another layer with "clipping group". I was supposed to pick a darker color now and paint something on this layer, so that "shadows" appear but nothing will happen. I already tested to download new version, reopening, trying on different layers with different options blah bluh blag.
Here's a picture how it looks like: http://i.imgur.com/x4Y1QDN.jpg

I'm kinda afraid that I got something completely wrong and it turns out that I'm a silly idiot, but even if this is the case, please help me. I seriously wanna improve :c

T H A N K S to all!

Bumping this before I go to bed.

Nobody has any help? :/

I think you have to select the drawing on the base layer using the select tool and then color on top of it on the clipping layer.

Did you try using a different brush? Or try unclipping it first and then click clip layer but idk i feel like the prob might be your brush
maybe un pin that thing by the folder idk what it is but I've never used it so I dunno haha

v cute drawing btw!!

i don't see any difference ;w;

make sure you ONLY have clipping layer on and NOT preserve opacity! preserve opacity makes it so you can't draw on the layer unless you have drawn on it already (v helpful for colouring!!)

That's really weird. I tried the tutorial with and without the layer mask and it worked for me? Used all brushes (including the default ones) and they all worked, too.

Check your canvas--especially the corners!--and make sure you haven't selected anything from the selection/lasso tool. If you selected even just one pixel you won't be able to do anything outside of that said pixel. Otherwise you either have to redo the masking (and hope for the best it'll work) or do it without it.

You forgot to do Step 3 where you had to change the layer mode (on the clipping layer) to Multiply. (。?̀ᴗ-)✧

Thank you guys for trying to help!! :'>
.... how to put it ...
I think I misunderstood something.
I just watched some yt clipping tutorials and it seems like clipping is only for the use that color doesn't go over the base colored-areas, for example, the background.
I actually thought that it does more than that.
But I don't wanna share what I thought it would do, because I would feel like an idiot.
Seems like I misinterpreted the comment of a deviantart-user on Mewm-sensei's tutorial link: "I love how in every tutorial the shadows magically appear, there's nothing about the theory behind where to place the shadows..."
Now that I precisely look at it, how the heck could I have misinterpreted... aghghghfergdfb

I'm an idiot after all. Please smack me DX

Even so, thanks for your lovely help!

ps. @bunnee, I have no idea ><
