So I've been seeing quite a few threads about save data corruption lately and I'm terrified. Like, I have nightmares about it now. I love my town and don't want to lose it. What can you do to prevent save data corruption? Or is there anything you can do?

It's some sort of tool used to create a backup file of your town so if anything goes wrong you can download the save file.
And don't reset when the game is saving. That's the main reason of corruption.

Don't hack your game, mess with the memory files, shut down while saving, or play a physical cartridge on a different memory card. Anything else within the game's boundaries (time traveling, plot-resetting, etc.) should be ok. Sometimes it just randomly happens as well.

Oh crap, it can just randomly happen? I'm scared now D:

That's what I'm assuming based on the multiple corruption threads. "OMG! My town is gone. I don't know what happened...blah blah blah." Something like that. Though I'm pretty sure some of them are lying to get pity and free hand-outs.

Don't turn the power off saving
Don't hack
Don't delete the Animal Crossing filel of of your SD card (just don't)
Don't dupe (duplicate)

And yes, it does happen randomly, with no signs either. If you buy a powersave, then you can save your town if corrupted.

And it's only a few, corruption is rare. People say it's common, but you probably only have a 2% chance. I've done all of those things but hack and delete the file. My games have NEVER corrupted, no matter how hard I tried (ex. Removing SD card when playing digital)

We're all scared.

And especially with cartridges that are 2 years old. I fear for those people.

WHAAAA?? Mine is almost 2 years old! D:

When you say "play a physical cartridge on a different memory card", what do you mean by that? My tech knowledge is very limited. XD Does that mean don't put my physical copy in my sister's D.S. or something like that?

That made me feel a little bit better. Is Power Save a hardware or software thing?

Yeah you pretty much got it. If you have one cartridge and play acnl on a specific memory card, then don't try to create another town using the same cartridge on a different memory card or it will overwrite your previous memory.

You technically can play on your sister's console, but you would have to switch out her memory card for the one in your 3DS. I don't see why you would want to do that though.

Thanks! I don't want to play on my sister's console, I was just trying to understand what I shouldn't do. ;)

It's a thing that you can buy off of amazon. I'll give you the US link:
http://www.amazon.com/Action-Replay...UTF8&qid=1442167783&sr=8-1&keywords=powersave

I'm adding that to my birthday list right now. XD

Well, my cartrigde was 2 years old... idk why it corrupted though, might be linked to that.

Like my corruption just happened randomly, I just saved and quit then came back today to see it corrupted. x(

It's fine I'm sure, I think the mods will understand

Even talking isn't allowed

I looked over the rules, it didn't say anything against talking about it. It said this though:

"Prohibited Transactions
Do not post about trading the following:

Forum bells or forum shop items in exchange for real money, gift cards, or items representative of real money.
Animal Crossing bells, items, or villagers in exchange for real money, gift cards, or items representative of real money.
Duplicated, hacked, or power-saved items in Animal Crossing.
Any other item in conflict with our rules and guidelines."

Talking about a powersave is and should be fine in this context, as this isn't mentioning anything other than a way to protect your saved data. People need to relax, it's just a forum, the mods aren't going to go into your town and ruin it just for mentioning the word powersave..

But, if you want to protect your town a powersave is the best and safest way to, as it can force a good save back onto your cartridge should anything ever become corrupted. I powersaved my game prior to coming onto this forum, as long as you don't start using it for cheats they aren't going to ban you

Last time I checked hacking includes powersaving

Save data corruption have been a problem of ACNL since day 1. It mostly happens when you quit without saving or basically when you quit when the message 'do not touch power button' appears. Also, in about 90% of the cases it happens on digital copies. You can either worry about this constantly or just play the game the way you enjoy it and just let things happen as they would already go. Your choice.

Resetting for a villager should not corrupt it, but be careful if you do it a lot. If you do it too much it can corrupt.

hacking and powersaving are not the same thing..

You can use a powersave to backup, and you can use it to cheat *not hack*, but regardless, powersaves are "not allowed" because then people would just powersave bells to win auctions which is unfair. However there is nothing wrong with using it just to back up your data. The OP was very clear on what they wanted to do, powersave is the only answer to their question on backing it up, and in no way is it discussing how to hack.

You don't have to agree with powersaves, but for some people who worked hard on their town it's good to know a safe way to back up the data. In fact, Aithycou was the one who mentioned it for backing up data, you're the one who turned it into hacking and spoke about it >.<!

My boyfriend's original town corrupted awhile back (he has physical copies of the game, as do I), and I was terrified of my town corrupting.

As others have said, get that which shall not be discussed (because it's a forum no-no) to create back-up files of your town. You'll rest much easier; trust me. ^_^
