Pond river or ocean?

Someone explain to me WHY I ONLY CATCH RIVER FISH IN MY POND?!?!

What’s the size limit on these things jeez. I assume my pond is too big? This whole time I thought river fish spawned in ponds as well and that the pond fish were super rare until a friend set me straight. I had assumed if it was a landlocked body of water it would be a pond.

I don't know the exact size for ponds, but I assume

nothing too elongated
nothing too large.

Keep it simple. Maybe no more than 6x6 max. A good size might bee like 5x3 or similar.

I was disappointed to find out some ponds I made recently were recognized by the game as rivers too... I don't think it's so much size as the ratio of length to width. Apparently if one dimension is so many tiles larger than the other the game thinks it's a river.

edit: I think this because the star pond I got with my starting map is 9x7 if I'm counting right. big pond, but still a pond. The ones I made were smaller but more long

Ahh maybe it’s too elongated. It’s so strange! I actually didn’t form the pond myself. It came with the island. Was actually the “pond” that was accessible on the main chunk of land.

I've got pond-sized reservoirs that have waterfalls exiting one side...the game sees those as rivers. I've also got fish-shaped reservoirs larger than the ones with waterfalls, and the game sees them as ponds. Not sure exactly the necessary dimensions, but make sure you don't have a waterfall coming out one side of them

I find pond fish in my 5x5 ponds, but otherwise slightly larger and I seem to only get river ones. Unsure on maximum size.

I have a pond at my airport entrance that has a current and only gives river fish. It is narrow compared to the width, so I assumed it was that (and possibly being so close to the ocean). If your pond doesn't have a current, I would guess it would give pond fish, with a current, river fish only.

If it has a waterfall, I think it's automatically a river. Unfortunately.

if your little bobble thing moves, then the game classifies it as a river. if it doesn’t, the game says it’s a pond.
