alright so i heard that you can lay out patterns to prevent villagers from plotting onto that space, so i've basically done that all over my town. but i also heard that you have to leave out a 3x4 space for the plot instead of a 3x3 space so i also did that. but for some reason while i'm plotting Erik, his plot only appears in the bottom of the space that i left out for him and not the top, like i want him to. does this mean that the space can also be 3x3? or am i doing something wrong

Edit: i forgot to post the picture :/

Thanks!
HOWEVER. I just plotted Portia in a 3x3 spot!!! I'm so happy!!!

Oh and on topic, I'm sorry,

I think you should just keep trying? This means the spot CAN be 3x3. Just keep trying <3

Woah there!
This actually works? Like they wont ever plot on paths?

I was plot resetting pashmina and she plotted in a 3x3 space? However, I didnt set up my paths like that I had something more like

---X
XOOO
OOOOX
XOOO
----X

(just kinda strategically randomly placed qrs so they cant realistically plot in certain spots)

They do not plot on paths!

I tried with Epona, and she kept plotting the same spot like 5/6 times (then I had enough XD). I put my 3DS- date on day back, put some patterns on that ground, put the date back to plotting-day, and she tried another plot ;)

I am so happy this is actually a thing! I read it, but I didn't really believe it.

Looks like your stubborn, evil days of plotting in the worst spots are over, Ganon!

A 3x3 space is all you need

how did you go a day back? doesn't that do the same as going forward?

It's because they had been plot resetting on day 2, so they hadn't actually saved the game on that date yet, so the last recorded time they spent in their town was on day 1. So when the plots weren't cooperating, they returned to day 1 to lay patterns, then jumped back into plot resetting on day 2.

What you really should mind is that you don't change the time with Isabelle, because she will automatically save the game, and you cannot plot reset anymore.

You should quit the game and then in the 3DS menu go to 'System Settings' (the icon with the bolt screw thingie, the wrench? english is not my native language). If you open that, go to 'Other Settings' (the icon bottom-right). There you can change the date of your 3DS, thus changing the date of Animal Crossing.

Then you can load op your mayor normally (keep watch of Isabelle's dialogue and make sure she saying that it is yesterday), put patterns on the ground.

Then save again and close Animal Crossing.

Go back to System Settings and change the date to today. Start Animal Crossing again and make a new character to start plot resetting

So it doesn't matter if you put an open spot for the door as illustrated below or not?

I can confirm that this doesn't matter, the plot only need to be 3x3. My Epona plotted directly against my path.
Once the house actually appears the day after, the path tile disappears.

I left a big 5x5 space for Hamlet to move in but he keeps plotting on my paths. Not sure what I did wrong. :(

i saw your post earlier, it's really weird :/ i hate it when tech doesn't work as intended, because you never know if it's your own fault or the game :(
i hope you find a good spot for Hamlet :) he is so cute, and if i didn't have Antonio in my town i would definitely have him instead!

He keeps plotting ON your paths? That should be impossible now. Have you updated your Animal Crossing New Leaf in the Nintendo eShop?

You can verify by looking at the title screen when your game starts. When you start up and you get the first few of your town (so before pressing A or Start), does the title show 'Animal Crossing New Leaf' with a red banner 'Welcome Amiibo' underneath?
