The first time you turn on your game for the day, don't go into any of your premade characters first. Make an entirely new character, and look around the town for a plot. If it's in the wrong spot, reset. If it's in the right spot, go to Isabelle, get a house from Nook, etc etc, then save + quit, delete the new character, and the plot will be saved in that spot. ^^

You won't ever lose a villager using the reset plot trick by itself.

To do the trick, you need to make a new save file the day you know a villager is moving in. DO NOT enter your town as a pre-existing character or it won't work. Go through the dialogue and find where the villager has put their plot down. (Roped area with a sign in front)

If you don't like where they put their house, press the HOME button and quit out of the game and redo it.

If you do like where they put it, go to Isabelle and then Nook's to plop a house down for that character. Log into your mayor and the villager plot should be where you want it. You can now delete the new character you just made.

A common misconception is that the time needs to be 5:58AM or something like that. It does not and I would not suggest even bothering to change the time every time you try this trick. I've seen many mayors accidentally choose to enter their town instead of change the time, putting their hard work to waste. It will work, no matter what time it is, as long as it's the move-in day of the new villager.

HOPE I'VE HELPED

The reason people do the 5:58am thing is if they want to do it before the new day and they don't want to mess with their 3DS clock, which can affect other games. I use the 5:58am method and it's fine. To be safe, you can set it to 5:50m and just make sure to wait ten minutes before creating a new character.
