Here we can all appreciate the majesty of pigeons. There are so many interesting things to learn about pigeons as the pigeon family holds such a variety of species.
For example, rock pigeons are the earliest domesticated bird. Research has found that pigeons were most likely domesticated over ten thousand years ago. Even early humans shared the same appreciation for the birds that we do today! That's just so amazing.
Pigeons were also very helpful in times of war. They would be used to send messages secretly over long or short distances. Several pigeons were even given medals and awards for their bravery and service.
Some pigeons are raised only to be killed and eaten. They are killed before they even get a chance to fly and right after they stop growing and getting more plump in their nests. Through selective breeding, commercial meat production in the pigeon business has begun to boom.
Pigeons are also captured and bred for hunting and sport. Captors will capture, breed, or purchase pigeons to use to free later and take part in shooting competitions!
