I was just reading the comment section of an Animal Crossing-related Youtube video where people were saying that they were "scammed" by Nintendo because the "surprise" update so many people were expecting for the 20th anniversary didn't happen.

Here's the thing--Nintendo never once indicated, implied, or even hinted that said update existed. You can't be "scammed" of something that wasn't promised (or even brought up at all by Nintendo, for that matter).

I don't know if I'm the only one who's noticed this, but I feel that people are coming up with these made-up imaginary updates in their heads and then getting disappointed/mad at Nintendo when they don't happen---despite the fact the fact that it exists solely in their minds and Nintendo had given zero indication or hint of it ever existing.

I feel that we've gone down this road so many times with the expectations people have with these updates. We're certainly just doing this again with this huge (as of right now, non-existent) "2.0" update that everyone is expecting. This supposed 2.0 update is simply a figment of people's imaginations, but I've seen many actually expecting it as if it were promised/hinted by Nintendo.

What are your guys' thoughts on this?

Edited To clarify: it was never my intention to anger or upset anyone when I created this thread. I simply wanted to point out something that I had observed going on within parts of the Animal Crossing Community. I am sincerely so sorry if this post came off as argumentative or upsetting to anyone.

Oh dear I was afraid this would happen. With all due respect I can see why they would be angry about it. I mean we are like 4 months into 2021 and Nintendo really hasn't said much about what to expect going forward in 2021. If they would've release a trailer that showcased what to look forward to in the future it wouldn't be so much of an issue. Since I know there was a lot of speculation going on I knew that people would be upset.

However, I will defend the game this one time. The people who are calling this a "Scam" really have no idea what they are talking about. Its a game where you can terraform your island and it has a lot of customization to do with your island. There really so much you can do when you first play the game. So I am not sure where the whole "scam" thing is coming from. While at the same time I do get why people complain so much that the game is missing stuff and like many people said before that they will come, but the only issue is that we really don't know when which is probably why there was people being a bit too excited about it.

With that being said and I know I mentioned this in another thread, but I'll say it here. Its impossible to predict whats going to happen in the future and I think by the end of the day we will get more updates with the game, since Nintendo made it clear that they were planning on supporting this game for 3 to 4 years so its not like they are going to abandon the game and move on to something else. All we can do is wait and see what happens. For now I think we just need to really slow down on the speculations, because I can see it being pretty tiring and it can pretty repetitive. We can only hope for so much and when it doesn't happened we just have to keep on waiting until it eventually happens. Its frustrating I know, but it is what it is.

Exactly. I rarely (and I mean almost never) ever defend this game, but the "scam" comments had me rolling my eyes. So far Nintendo has not made any false promises about the game. While yes, what we currently have is in my honest opinion, super boring and lifeless, it's not like Nintendo ever promised anything other than what they've given us thus far. I'm afraid people are putting words in Nintendo's mouth and are just setting themselves up for disappointment.

I can only wish that Nintendo would give us some, huge, amazing game-changing update...but I am not going to be disappointed or act like Nintendo ever promised anything of the sort when it doesn't happen.

mini rant~
ACNH has a lot of really big issues. While it might seem silly to you to listen to people get frustrated over nothing happening, there have been files in-game for months now hinting at The Roost and gyroids making a comeback. There's usually next to no information given out over when QoL and features will drop, so people getting excited for a big date in the franchise is pretty normal.
Personally, I think it's really frustrating when people feel the need to voice their anti-opinion: that actually, the status quo is fine and wanting things to change is silly. Game devs have always had pressure put on them by fans, it's just now that there are platforms like twitter where you can see outrage and frustration over gaping issues in games.

Oh I don't disagree that the game falls short in so many aspects! However, while potential hints exist in the code, Nintendo has NOT given any official indication that they are coming, nor should we act like that until they do give word. See my above reply as to why I don't feel it's appropriate to say we've been "scammed":

No, that was not at all my intention! :) I am just pointing out that people are setting themselves up for major disappointment, as Nintendo has rarely delivered an update that has lived up to people's huge expectations.

I feel like no matter what Nintendo does, there's always going to be disappointed people. That's just how it is with people and games. I still have high hopes for the big 2.0 update, but to be honest I won't be surprised if it's a typical small update like a lot of the previous updates. I never even thought about there possibly being a 20 year anniversary update

what your kind of rhetoric does, though, is flatten the argument of "things should be better" into "people online are angry". it's unproductive.

Yes, the people I came across on this specific video were actually angry. There's a difference between wishing things were better (like I do--see above replies) and having actual expectations placed on Nintendo on the basis of something you made up in your head.

I see that you want to turn this into an argument, and this was not at all my intention with this post, so I'm not going to engage any further with you. I definitely understand your opinion, and you are completely entitled to it--it's just that I guess we don't see it the same way. I know this is just going to end up going in circles and nobody's mind is going to be changed, so I'm just going to drop it right here. :)

Let's just say there are some real self-entitled, ungrateful people around...

I have seen how upset people about this game and the updates on Twitter. Expecting something to be there, when it was never even announced officially by Nintendo in the first place.
If it hasn't being said by Nintendo, it most likely isn't going to happen, so people are just falling for these false rumours and speculations that are going around about what might be coming in the game. What they need to in fact do, in the nicest way possible is wake up and remember that none of the stuff people are making videos on the internet about is actually true for the 2.0 update because Nintendo has yet to make an announcement on when there will even be another update.

But also, at the end of the day there are always going to be people that are never happy and expect so much of Nintendo, when in fact Nintendo is actually busy working on other games that people enjoy playing, not just ACNH.
So what I do with these updates, is just wait and see what happens. I don't get my hopes up too high, so that I won't be disappointed. Oh and also i'm actually grateful for whatever we are given, because it's better than nothing right? (not saying that no one else is grateful).

and so seeing talk like this, where someone isn't even talking about the problems themselves, just that people have issues with a product, is embarrassing. it's childish in-group fighting and brings zero valuable discussion to the table. strawmanning "gamers" and then just hurling dumb insults doesn't contribute to anything, and doesn't really have a place in actual discussions outside 140-character limit posts. IMO.

this is what i think as well in general, i think it's pointless to complain about other people expressing their opinions and frustrations, and lately it's been the popular thing to do. Just call anyone who has a different opinion than yours, and anyone who makes criticisms, "negative" and feel better about yourself i think it's immature and toxic. But at the same time I agree that a lot of people express their criticisms in an immature way as well and often don't know what they're talking about, so I can definitely see where the "angry gamer" thing is coming from too. Criticizing is important for things to improve, it's food for thought for the developers and future developers. Calling the game a scam is very silly and exaggerating though, and a lot of the time these people flood certain places with negativity (I've seen it again and again in pokemon directs), so I think ideally everyone should be able to voice their opinions in a respecting way and be respected by others as well, not trying to ruin other people's enjoyment. I think the pokemon directs are a good example when the live chat is full of people yelling that they hate everything, lol

tl;dr: i agree with you and OP both. I think everyone should be able to express their opinion without being labelled as "negative" or "toxic", but that also means that they should express opinions peacefully and not make false claims and accusing

(sorry for my english)

I thoroughly agree with you because I am certainly guilty of that. I set up high expectations for the anniversary update that many of us imagined as huge, and I was disappointed (not THAT much, though). Nobody is to blame for that but myself lol. I am doing the same for this supposedly upcoming 2.0 update and I won’t be surprised if I don’t get everything I’m expecting in the next update because at this point I’m hoping for too many new features to be included. I must admit that the “disappointment“ I‘m talking hasn’t changed a bit the love I feel for this game. I mean, I know that only a handful of features can be released in a single update, and it’s better this way, at least in my opinion, so I have only been slightly disappointed and I recognise that it is only because of the too high expectations I had set up.

I think that many Animal Crossing fans hope for huge updates to be released simply because of the so-called “missing” features, myself included. I keep thinking that the next update will include at least one of these “missing” features, so this is one further reason for the “disappointment“ I was talking about. Besides, many of the expectations you mentioned often are “the return of Brewster” or “Nook’s Cranny expansions”. I am sure (but I might be wrong) that most of the ”missed“ features will be released eventually, so I keep setting up these same expectations for every upcoming update. This is why I, and I believe many other AC fans, always look forward to seeing what is coming up next. After a couple of days (for me it’s just a few hours really), the disappointment turns into hope and anticipation. It’s like a vicious circle in the end.

I mean we are like 4 months into 2021 and Nintendo really hasn't said much about what to expect going forward in 2021. If they would've release a trailer that showcased what to look forward to in the future it wouldn't be so much of an issue.

this. since the game’s release, i have refused to do anything more than keeping tabs on datamines and watching update trailers when they drop as not only do i not want to get my hopes up, i genuinely have no idea what nintendo is doing or is planning to do ... which is the problem.

i try my absolute hardest not to complain but i hate how trying to get any sort of information from nintendo feels like pulling teeth. there’s been so much that nintendo has stayed silent on, from removing posters from the catalog unless you obtained them yourself to having germany be exempt from the sanrio card re-release and leaving that information for another website to announce 3 days later, despite the fact that nintendo germany had tweeted about the launch, obviously giving german fans the wrong impression. :/ and when it comes to the lack of content in new horizons, i’ve seen a lot of people bring up the fact that new leaf didn’t get the WA update, which was pretty big, until a few years after new leaf had come out and while that is true, the difference is is that new leaf had a lot to offer before WA; shop upgrades, several items and furniture sets, club tortimer, minigames and so much more. new horizons does not have that luxury. like everyone else, i’m dying for some new content but honestly, the main thing that i want right now is transparency. whether there’s a big update in the works or not, we deserve more than to receive radio silence for weeks or months at a time - what should we expect from nintendo this year? will content eventually be hidden behind a paywall? there’s so many questions and yet so few answers and that’s what i have a problem with.

there have been files in-game for months now hinting at The Roost and gyroids making a comeback.
just saying, datamined info is specifically not meant to be public knowledge and should bluntly always be treated as throwaway leftovers until such time the information about is made public through official sources

nintendo of course has fault here for not cleaning up the update files to remove this stuff until it's needed, but complaining about x thing not existing because y datamine content people weren't even meant to be aware of is just setting yourself up for disappointment

As far as an anniversary updated I figured we would only get a cake since like you said since nothing was announced. Most people’s frustration comes from lack of information which I don’t think will change. We didn’t know what would be in updates last year either. It would be nice if Nintendo would let us know would to expect for the next year. I don’t like knowing what’s in the datamines because it could change or not mean what people think. I can see why people are angry and disappointed. People excepted more from the updates and certain things brought back sooner. Personally I think it was Nintendo’s plan to roll out new content slowly I think people didn’t expect it to be this slow.
