what are your thoughts about this? this proves to be difficult, since the sd cards don’t really serve a purpose for multiplayer. it defeats the point of sd cards. i’ve seen people purchase like five switches just for animal crossing because of the save data being attached to one console. if you only purchase a hard copy, and your switch is damaged, your hard work is gone. it’s honestly a plot for nintendo to get more money smh.

~thoughts?

I'm actually pretty annoyed with the one island per console at this point. I have my ideas and my brother has his. They're both similar, but he's flat out said the work I put in is ugly compared to other islands he's seen, and that honestly pisses me off. Then he wants to have houses and inclines I placed somewhere else. I should just buy my own console and game.

I think you'd be hard-pressed to find players who are actively in favour of this concept. It's just a matter of the degree to which one is affected by it.

I'd posit that the reason the human player cap is so high (8 humans per island, which borders on superfluousness rather than generosity) is a result of this, and by extension, it's likely the reason we can't have more than 10 villagers when there is so obviously space for them. For me, that's the biggest source of frustration. I want more animal friends. >:c

It's also worth mentioning that the main reason that ACNH has been review-bombed to the extent it has is this very issue, but on the flip side of it: Not only is this a frustrating feature for single players who want to have a second island/file on their Switch, but the actual implementation of the same-console multiplayer is infamously lacking.

I think they should allow new islands for new accounts on your family switch. I get that they are trying to avoid cheating from multiple accounts on one switch, but it really is not that much of an advantage. So you get extra stalk market prices, flowers and fruit from a family members island...big deal. It only takes a minute to hook up with someone online to get the fruit or flowers anyway. I don't see the point in restricting 1 island to 1 console. It actually encourages the die hards to buy more game copies and nintendo switches, maybe that was their intentions all along lol.

It works out for me personally because I only play AC with my mom, and we work together really well developing the island. She doesn't do too much besides fishing and decorating her little section of the island. It is definitely still mostly "my" island. However, if I were to have to share it with my brother or anyone else who is more controlling, it would absolutely be a nightmare, so I 1000% understand the complaints.

I have my island too myself on NH, but I shared a town with my sibling on WW.
We couldn't agree on a town name nevermind, what villagers should stay/leave,the town flag, who got to decorate specific rooms etc.
So my heart goes out to players sharing an island because I gave up playing ww until he was finished playing it.One person has an enjoyable experience, where as the other player isn't allowed much input on the island.

Uffe do you and your sibling share the switch or does one of yous own it?

We paid half each for the Switch. I bought Animal Crossing: New Horizons, though. And another thing that annoys me is that he said he's never cared much for Animal Crossing while I have. He says he wants more space, which is understandable, but he has no idea what to put in these empty spaces whenever that'll happen. He wants houses and inclines moved around when I had asked him if this or that looked good. He said yes to all of that until he started watching island tours. So now I'm just feeling like I'm wasting my time with this game. This one island per Switch didn't bother me in the beginning, but now it is.

It’s a bit of a nuisance. I have my own Switch and own island and it’s all I need, but I know my sister and her roommate share their island. I remember my sister saying she found Maple on an island and was going to move her in to surprise her roommate. They’re not kids so I guess it’s fine and they wouldn’t disagree or argue over it. I personally wouldn’t like having an island for multiple people. With the Gamecube as long as you had the memory cards and space, you could have many towns.

The one island per person thing doesn't affect me since is switch are my own and my siblings are literally babies so I dont have to share with anyone, but I can see how it would upset so many people since not everyone will agree on the island name/design and villagers. Switches are also really expensive and so is the game so I can't imagine having to buy another switch and NL copy atm, even though I was so obsessed with NL that I actually ended up buying another 3DS and NL copy 😅

Also in NL the mayor could make some decisions that other players couldn't who were living on the island. I'm not sure if it is like that in NH too but it would really frustrate me if I was a second player and didnt have the ability to do everything the 1st player could do.

The second player can't really do much the first player can in New Horizons. The first player is only allowed to move houses, buildings, put up bridges, and inclines. The second player can only move their own house and pay off bridges and inclines.

just before ACNH came out I said I'd share with my sister but after realising we absolutely couldn't agree on one theme + we always wanted to play at the same time, I just bought a switch lite myself and started my own island a week late

Oh, then that sucks even more than not being able to have another island!

it is super annoying to me. i don't have to share my switch/island with anyone, but i just always loved the ability in new leaf to have multiple towns on multiple cartridges. it's a huge bummer to know that i can only have one island unless i buy a whole new console, which is ridiculous and obviously i wouldn't do.

Me & my brother get along for the most part... sike. It does get a little old erasing barold patterns all over our island. And a bit more work to clear areas. But what's gaming without a little spice here & there?

This is one of the main reasons that the feature received so much (justified, IMO) criticism following the game's release. Couples and families who tried to play the game together were shocked to find out that much of the game's essential content was arbitrarily locked behind "Well, which of you opened up the game first?"

I feel like since you bought the game you should have creative control over the island.
How long before you think he will lose interest in the game?
because I think he should be the one buying another switch and game if we wants to start spearheading where things are going.

I bought the game, so I let it be known that I was going to be the mayor of the island, or whatever they call you in this game. We've agreed with most things up until now.

I can’t stand this decision, have been upset about it ever since we learned about it and couldn’t understand why more people weren’t bothered by it on twitter, and I had deliberately chosen not to buy the game until my brother could get his own switch because of it—this only changed because a good friend bought the game for me and I couldn’t just turn it down. However, that didn’t get rid of the problem at all—I’ve now quit playing and decided again not to play until my brother can get his own switch, with the fact that I have to share with him and my dad being a huge deciding factor. And for me it’s not even about disagreeing on island design as they don’t really care what I do with the island, but about the fact that their houses take up a lot of space and I can’t move them where I want and I want to have at least 3 additional player houses of my own but simply will not have space with them on there. The second we have another switch that they can live on I’m completely resetting the island! And even then the problem won’t be gone because I still have to stick to just one island forever and can’t try out the other two different design themes I have in my head. In New Leaf I have 4 towns because a NL cartridge is cheap but now in NH doing that would cost me an absolute minimum of $780 if I bought 3 switch lites and 3 game copies, which is never going to happen lol. It makes me so sad and frustrated.
