So I started school again this week and was wondering how people not play for a long amount of time without losing any villagers? I think it was something like TT on your 3DS to the day you last played or something, but I wanna ask just in case! thanks

Pretty much that. Just make a note of the last day you played and then change the date on your system clock to the last day played and voila, no villagers lost.

I find that one of my villagers ask to move every 5 days or so, so if you have been absent for the game for longer time than that then I would suggest to time travel back or be very cautious.

Yes, that is true.

What you can also do is to make sure you stop someone from moving (so they ping you and you tell them to stay).
If you do this, save and end normally, you can also stop playing for an infinite amount of days without anyone moving out.

See, the game needs to process the moving cancellation. It will do this on the next day it saves. So if you stop someone from moving and don't play, let's say, for 2 months, then when you start up the game after two months, only then will the game process the move out cancelling.
So no villagers will be able to move out.

Or you can do the never ending day-trick. But I don't think that will work in your case considering that you probably won't just not play the game for a while but rather not start the game at all. So yeah, that and the method you already said are what you could do. The method Melyora describes will only work for 5 days if you want to be sure you're not losing any villagers as 5 days is the minimum that your game needs to 'think' before they decide to let another villager move out.

Another trick I've heard is starting the game with a new save file(like with plot resetting), then saving the game once you've confirmed that all your villagers are still there, then deleting the new character. I've tried it a couple times, and it seems to work, although I wasn't gone for an incredibly long time ^^;
