I was thinking this exact same thing. Who hasn't cried or gotten upset over something in a movie, TV show or book. Same difference, this just happens to be a video game.

I once lost Aurora and cried pretty hard, but the thing was Aurora was super important to me when I was little, she was the only WW villager I cared and remember, she was super sweet and was the first to give me her pic. When I got New Leaf I was determined to find her and was ecstatic to have her again, I even gave her my fireworks table, my favorite dlc at the time.
Then one time after rejecting her request to move and quitting to travel six days forward, I loaded to learn that I had forgotten to save and lost my dear friend yet again. I cried horribly and a while later (maybe like a week) I had gotten Ruby, another villager I really wanted and when I told my mom she replies "Just don't cry over this one if she moves," even when she KNEW how much Aurora meant to me.
To add insult to injury one my friends I argue with regularly (they're not serious, just humorous scrabbles usually), said "at least I don't cry over a stupid penguin leaving."
I didn't mean to rant but honestly this has been bothering me for a while, sorry for the long reply.

But first off, your mum needs to learn the meaning of depressed, feeling a bit bummed cause a villager left is nowhere close to depression.
Otherwise, it's no different from you feeling sad if a character in a book dies, look at all the people that got upset when Ned Stark died in Game of Thrones. Or when people cried when someone died of cancer in Eastenders or whatever it was.
I would say it makes more sense to get upset about AC characters because you actually interact with and befriend them, or curse them until they move out and naturally attachments do form.
It's the same as when people say playing video games is a dumb waste of time and then when you ask how much time they spend in front of the TV they're like ''uhhhh..... shut up, it's different, TV is real!''

Yeah, parents can say some really hurtful things sometimes, but getting upset over losing someone you're attached to -- fictional or otherwise -- is perfectly normal. I mean, I cried for years when Digimon Adventure01 ended when I was a kid, I still get upset whenever a villager asks to move, and there were people that freaking killed themselves when Harry Potter ended. If you're really upset about what she said, though, I'd let her know that she hurt your feelings and that you don't appreciate her reaction.
