Pretty sure the first shop upgrade happened pretty quickly in the past games. You most certainly did not have to wait anywhere near a month.

No, it was much sooner. According to a random site I just pulled up, it was 25,000 total of sell/buy combined, and 8 days wait to get Nook n Go in some of the older games. Then it was simply 65,000 bells total to upgrade that into Nookway (with no day limit). Then Nookington's was 240,000 bell total (again with no day limit).
If you really grinded, you could feasibly have the final update after only 11 or 12 days (or something like that...I think). Lol.

30 days since starting your island but you don't build the shop on day one, so it will still take a bit longer for non TTers. Should be this week though.

I think Mabel is going to be in the next nook expansion instead of the giraffe ( don't hate me can't remember her name). I would love fresh new designs from her and not the same old over priced
I love the way Nintendo is handling this game. Spoilers have been cut way down, and I've genuinely got things to look forward to. The most painful part is building/demolishing/moving the bridges/inclines/shops/homes/campsite/museum.

i refuse to believe that there is only 1 upgrade to the shop, especially considering the number of shop upgrades that were available in new leaf. i agree with a lot of other people on here, the way that the upgraded nook's cranny looks is... very unfinished. it looks like it's still under construction to me. it makes me wonder, though, how long it will take fro the devs to release the rest of the game's content to us.

Probably one full year. The game is designed with a one-year cycle in mind. So, everything that is part of the main rollout should be done in the span of the first year. Other stuff can be patched in or added as DLC later...but anything "big" should definitely be the first year.
There are A LOT of things locked behind the incoming updates that have been in the games code since the first patch went out. The guide that is soon to be released is more of a "launch guide" as it doesn't feature any of the post-launch content. I think we'll probably see a couple new additions to the game (aside from Earth Day) be implemented as soon as next week.
i definitely think that further expansions are locked behind updates - i know that the second expansion was only added in the bunny day update, so i’m hoping that another expansion will be unlocked next week with the earth day update
On one hand I really want more to build and advance, but on the other hand I’ve kinda planned my layout and design around the style of the current storefronts. Suddenly having a huge department store would ruin my aesthetic completely *sigh*

This is what I’ve heard as well, and I’m wondering if the Earth Day update might include the second upgrade with it. Guess we’ll see here soon enough.
Well dataminers already found hints at a 3rd (or 4th) expansion in the launch build for the game. Below are door strings contained in the game's code. Look at the strings for "Market".
