My friends and I were having a good time. We caught lots of fish and my friends drew beautiful things on my message board. I decided to end the session when my message board stopped loading altogether. But because my friend (who was flexing a horse mackerel) didn’t put away her fish on time, Nintendo decided to leave me with this ugly message, phrased as if their crappy online play was a list of terms and conditions I had to agree to.

We lost everything. You’d think their forced autosave system would apply during online play, but I guess not.

My friend was literally just playing the game by flexing her fish and now she feels bad when she shouldn’t. Online play shouldn’t be this risky to do.

Autosave does work but I'm not sure how often it saves online. Did she get a countdown to close the window? This looks like someone left with - tbh

There was a countdown on my end but not sure if it registered on hers or if she just didn’t see it. I ended the session as the host with the minus button.

Still very crappily designed, either way.

It's definitely a flawed system, but I get why it has to exist. If there was no way to force the session to end, you could end up trapped in someone's town or vice versa. Not sure why it still can't save though. To try to prevent scamming perhaps?

FYI, if you try to end and someone has a window open, it'll do its usual trying to close thing, then a countdown will appear telling you how much time you have left until the session force-ends. At that point, you can press B to stop trying to end all together.

From a design standpoint, it does make sense.

We can make a speculation based from the information we got so far. I got a feeling that Nintendo's servers only provides a gateway for players to make a "handshake" before it will end up as a peer to peer. (I know that this isn't necessary but they just want to monetise online play.) After all, our save files aren't in the cloud to begin with. That's why they have to put all these safety mechanisms in place to safeguard our data.

The auto save works online, but it's like every 15 minutes, rather than the usual 2 minutes.

What I don't get is why can't the game force autosave while people have windows or conversations open.

This is how NL's system worked to, except that if someone was trying to enter/leave/or end the session the game would just give up and resume the online play. It didn't just kick like this. I haven't tested this to see if this is a common thing if someone doesn't get out of a menu of some sort. Kind of sad that they found another way to make online that we pay for worst.

I think it's really bad too...
I have lost progress due to communication errors multiple times

Honestly I don't know what Nintendo's problem is lately. No one should have to be paying real money for their sorry excuse of online play. It's ridiculously bad in this game (ACNH) and in Pokemon SW/SH. I just don't understand what happened when they made the jump from the 3DS to the Switch. Everything just went downhill. Regardless, I'm hooked on their games, so I keep paying for the online play membership and excitedly await every new update.

Geez and we pay for this sorry excuse for online play? I’d stop playing altogether but i still play acnh with my friends so i don’t have much of a choice
