When you sign up you are a Ninja Academy Student. Once you graduate from the academy you become a genin, and then you need to take a very difficult exam to become a chuunin. Then after a while you become a Jounin. If you like Naruto, then you'll understand what I mean . So everyone starts as students. And I'm the one who promotes you, BTW.
