NEW HAIRSTYLES!

I understand this but the fact is they aren't the only people with hairstyles like these historically.
while this may be true, in MODERN times people may (and do) still face discrimination for hairstyles like these, and that's why this is an issue.

no offense to people saying "i can't wear these hairstyles because social media is mean", but this reason is a bit tone-deaf. this is a singleplayer game, so if you don't post any screenshots on social media or whatever no one really knows what you get up to. because of that, wear whatever you want. but when you post things publicly, you open it up to the public opinion, and these opinions are real people's opinions that are rooted in valid concerns. blaming social media for speaking out about these concerns just seems to me like people may not actually understand the reason WHY people have these opinions.

like MiniPocketWorld said, we definitely shouldn't judge people about how they style their appearance. but this issue is more complex then that rule of thumb, so please at least be mindful of what you're doing and saying.

i've never been the best at explaining myself and i didn't rly want to say my piece on this issue for this reason, so if someone responds to this i'll read it but i won't respond back. i'm not rly here to debate or get into arguments, but to offer my thoughts however inconsequential they may be.

I love that they've added in more hairstyles that make it so people feel like they're being represented and can make a character that looks like themselves, I hope they continue adding in more hairstyles over the coming months while they're releasing updates

It is true people are still discriminated against for hairstyles like these, or their hair texture, or their hair color. All the more reason why people need to stop criticizing other people's hair. (whether naturally occurring or not). When that happens, perhaps the discrimination will go down more. Criticism is half the problem and embeds more negative feelings/thoughts/actions about it. Then you get more nonsense on who deserves or is justified to whatever and nonsense policing. And we get no where at the end of the day. If nothing else even a step or two backwards because then individuals or businesses will be concerned if such and such will get them bad reactions. And what is worse is that people who don't fit the "what's trending appearance" will get caught in the crossfire. (you know like people who are mixed. or have certain genetics that make them appear to have certain traits.)
I am just tired of seeing people get criticized or teased about their hair at jobs. Too curly, too limp, too messy, too poofy, that red is too red and MUST be fake so dye it, get some highlights, get a perm, go get some relaxer, go straighten ect. And now this nonsense is slipping into animal crossing which is ridiculous and isn't being progressive.
And please don't take this reply as an attack or negative towards anyone here. It isn't meant to be at all.
And the last thing I want is for Nintendo to have regrets because of how people are acting and reacting about it. However I do wonder if in the future, they will have the choice of choosing a character with hair attached to skin color which would be very unfortunate because there are so many genetic varieties of people out there.
Part of the point of customization is to be able to make a character that reflects you. And maybe at the end of the day, that is what people are meaning when they express their distaste for a pale skinned animal crossing character having these new hairstyles on. But people can't justly sit there and state that just because of their skin they can or can't have such and such hair.
That is too close to segregation and racism, if isn't on the head, for me.

Be careful conflating people getting upset with others using particular hairstyles in a game with racism and segregation. Those are very very different things. Centuries of violence are not comparable to people getting mad on Twitter.

This is a good point. It's definitely a complicated issue

Racism and segregation does not always equal violence (physical force intended to hurt, damage, or kill someone or something). And there are close relations between racisms and segregation. Judging people by appearance and separating people by appearance does not lead to good things and there are titles for that. This is why I said it was too close to that for me. I don't like it when people categorize me because I look this race or that race. I am sure other's don't as well. I don't like it when black women get bashed for having blonde hair and I don't like it when someone who is mixed gets bashed for having braids because they are pale. Simple as that. People just need to leave people's bodies alone.

Honestly it's a littttttle disappointing to me that poc had to WAIT months into the game being released to finally get some accurate representation with hairstyles imo, but I guess better late than never. Would have been nice to have some default poc hairstyles
Well, looking at the default hairstyles, there is one:

And another in Top 8 Pop Hairstyles from the nook miles kiosk

But, yeah, that was it. 2 hairstyles outta...24? :/ C'mon, nintendo.

It is good that they listened, but they can, and should, and hopefully will, do more. I'd love to see even more hairstyles, there were quite a few styles in that petition they could still do.

People will find a way to be offended no matter what you do. I've seen plenty of people using the new styles already and I love it, they all look great! It doesn't matter what you do. Live your life with kindness and forget everything else.

The person wearing the space buns was treated horribly by people on twitter. They wanted her doxed and destroyed. They said some very hateful things. She's simply guilty of enjoying her game and trying different hair styles. That's it. Not to mention the fact that white people can have very curly hair too. My daughter does and a friend of mine as well. These people are hateful and I say shame on them. Absolutely discusting. I hope that this girl is not too young and hopefully didn't take the attack too hard. Although that's highly unlikely. Words can hurt. Even on social media. Not to mention that they know nothing about her. She could be biracial, have very curly hair, suffer from depression, have suicidal thoughts.etc, etc. I do however believe that these hateful people do not speak for everyone and most people are kind hearted and would not do this to someone.

On a side note. I'm loving the super poofy old lady hair. It looks so cute on my farmer character.

omfg this is so cute

I feel like nintendo tried to just add hair styles that are the epitome of basic to please the majority. But since people are able to be vocal due to social media, people with textured hair were like "HELLO my hair doesnt look like that". I dont think nintendo did it to be malicious, but hopefully in the future they make a better effort to be reminded there are lots of people that have super textured hair.

Honestly what surprises me the most out of the entire thing is that Nintendo saw what people wanted and added it.

Now if only they can do that with some QOL stuff yes???

You know, I was actually pretty indifferent to a lot of the hair styles, but those buns do look cute from the screenshot you provided :). I’m not sure if I’ll use them, but it is nice to have some more options regardless. I actually liked the shaved and bald hair style the best until I saw your picture. lol.

I agree with this. Wearing them is not disrespecting anyone unless you put in your description or add text with some derogatory language.

This is my opinion of course; no disrespect to others who feel otherwise or still feel uncomfortable. I have severe anxiety so I have been refraining from posting my designs on social media having seen myself how rude people are (on matters not related to AC). Even here, I do get worried about how people feel about my stuff even though what matters is that I’m happen with it, especially after the halloween contest.

Understandable. You know you could always just wear a different hair style if you really like sharing your screenshots there and worry about people’s opinions that much and then change it back to whatever you like when you play by yourself. But it’s your game, so definitely do whatever makes you feel comfortable.
Hey, I just wanted to say that I really relate (having an anxiety disorder myself). Your posts have really helped me feel welcome here. I joined the forum to work on my communication skills a bit. Your frankness about your anxiety has really helped me feel more comfortable with the way that I am and less like an outsider.

Edit- sorry, posted early on accident. This is the whole post now.

On the subject of the thread: I think the new hairstyles will look really cute on a lot of people <3

seen people saying white people can't use the new hair styles period those are the true racist people
