o yea im trying that and i think it went down yet another shade. :'D I'm glad I noticed before it was too late, but i still wish it would go down faster.
Yeah, that's annoying :/ I'm the opposite though, I wish the tan lasted longer.
Honestly it goes down faster than you think, just a few days. I didn't know about the tan thing when I started the game at the end of July, and so my first week, my character was DARK...and it was uncomfortable, only because I didn't relate to her anymore. So I can see why it bothers you, although some people tan on purpose for the opposite reason. At this point, you only have to worry about it when you're on the island. So just leave the hat in your basket. Every time you go to the island take it out and use it, then when you're done, put it back in there. It'll stay for all your future visits. Also, once it's not dark dark, and gradually fades, it'll be less noticeable to you. Give it a few more days.

it's stupid how some people have to work for a tan like if i stepped in and i was automatically a darker shade i'd be so unnerved and upset

rover could ask about the weather/temp of where youre from and depending on how hot it is the darker your chara is.

That's actually pretty creative since in the game it keeps you from tanning in the colder months.
((despite being able to tan in the winter in real life if you wanted to. XP))

Man I'm jealous. My character got pretty dark the first couple weeks I played, but it faded really fast and I haven't been able to tan since, no matter how long I spend on the island. I tan really easily IRL and it's frustrating my character wont seem to tan at all.
You said you're using the peach parasol, right? Like Princess Peach's? That might be part of the issue, maybe it's too small and you should get like a full size one? I dunno, I wish I had your problem

This post was very informative and thanks for the heads up re: the parasol. My mayor Winter cannot be tanned at all. I need her with pale white skin - for obvious reasons. I'm waiting for shampoodle to be built so I can get my hair whitened, but for now I'm wearing the powdered wig ( actually it's look isn't so bad - I may keep it on even after shampoodle arrives. ) Needless to say I can't wear a hat and the wig together so I've been avoiding the island. Parasol = problem solved.
You wouldn't be able to take the parasol onto the island. But if you wear a hat then it goes with you, since it's already on your body. Do you guys know about Liquefy's list of hats that prevent tanning? It's a long doc, but do a search for "Tanning" and it'll take you to the right section.
