My one qualm about Lazy villagers...

Does the 'bug' talk.... 'bug you?

As someone who insanely loves bugs, I personally like the bug talk
I'm okay with it as long as I only have one lazy. I think it works with Lucky as I'm imagining him having bugs snacking on him under his bandadges and he is a bit of a weirdo, but having more villagers with the same quirk would be a little weird.
and I relate to that, the only lazy I have is Zucker, and bugs would like to eat em since he is literally food.

I don't mind it, but I think the mileage depends on the villager. For example, I have two lazies in my town (Beau and Hopkins) and I find it's a lot more tolerable with Beau because his house has that outdoor theme going for it so it wouldn't be too far off to have an obsession with bugs in that kind of setting. It can be a little more grating with Hopkins because it doesn't make as much sense with his arcade-themed house, but I think the shift in lazies being more like small children suits someone like Hopkins more. I can't speak for any of the other lazies though.

I think they’re supposed to be kind of sloppy and they love food- whenever I get a DIY from one of my lazy villagers they tell me that the grease stain from the cookie they were eating is not a part of it. I think if you put being messy+leaving food and crumbs everywhere, you get... bugs. So that’s probably where that comes from. They’re supposed to be a little childlike and kids don’t usually pick up after themselves and they also use their imagination a lot more~ so I can see why the silly bug stuff would be in their dialogue and why they have conversations with said bugs. Doesn’t bother me~ I don’t like bugs IRL but these aren’t real bugs so.

I love most of the lazy dialogue, Punchy says so so many funny things to me that aren't about bugs and I love him as much as I always have, but. I've said this in a million threads and I'll say it again. I'm not sure if there's anything in this game I absolutely hate more than the bug dialogue--maybe that's an exaggeration, but it's in the top 5 worst things for sure. It's made what was my favorite personality in every other game only my 2nd or even 3rd favorite in this one (and if I wasn't already so strongly attached to so many different lazies they'd be lower than that), it's contradictory to the fact that in NL lazies reassured you that their houses were cockroach free (ETA: I also just wanna state that in NL, this reassurance that their house doesn't have roaches is pretty much the only time they mention bugs at all), and according to a user I've spoken to on here who plays in both English and Japanese, it's purely a localization choice since they don't do it in Japanese in the first place. It's a choice I do not understand or like at all. I get that lazies would be messy, but god, I'm incredibly, excessively messy too and my house does not have bugs.

So tl;dr version: I hate it. It's dissuaded me from ever having 2 lazies at once in this game and as a result I kicked Zucker, when in GC/WW/NL I would gladly have 3 lazies at once if I wanted. And I don't know why they didn't just add some occasional discussion of loving bugs into the pool of other lazy dialogue while keeping a love of food/sleeping as their main trait, rather than making bugs bugs bugs bugs now central to the personality.

I liked it at first because it was weird and funny because of that, but I'm over it now. Mostly because the bug lines feel extremely repetitive now.

It was funny at first, but I'm not as much of a fan anymore. I'm glad I only want one lazy on my island, but even one almost feels like too much at times, tbh.

I don't like how they turned lazies into filthy manchildren. I remember in the Gamecube version they used to be like stoner-hippy-surfer dudes. Just real chill, go with the flow, live in the moment type dudes. They talked about food, but I never got the impression that they were disgusting. They just had the munchies, man. I missed on the games in between, but it feels like they got severely Flanderized somewhere between GCN and NH.

It is weird, but I do find it funny when they do the HHA talk after evaluation and their evaluation says "SO MANY BUGS!!!" and I imagine the inspector running around and screaming scared, but the lazy villager just sees So Many Bugs as a compliment. Lol.

It concerns me. Like to a point its cute but sometimes I just get creeped out. Why are bugs whispering to you. Dang it stop FEEDING THE ONE IN YOUR WALLS. I just dont understand. I get it you like bugs but why are they your best friends. Its like... Their version of haunted little girls playing with dolls but...bugs and boys.

I don't really care for the bug talk myself. I still love Bob, but I somehow like him less than I used to because of it.

At least he doesn't seem as heavy on the bug talk as Broccolo did, oddly enough.

I voted meh I have Drago so to me when he talks about bugs it’s cute because he’s a dragon-like aligator. Same if it were a bird. But if it’s a cat or pig or hamster or something that would be weird.

I would've voted meh if I still had Zucker (it felt natural with him talking about it for some reason) but I replaced him with Filbert and for some reason it doesn't feel the same on him?

So basically, if it's not Zucker, I dislike them talking about bugs lol. Hate is a strong word.

I'm under the impression that the lazy villagers are given that dialog because whoever decided to make them talk about bugs probably thinks lazy people don't clean up after themselves. Or maybe they live with a lazy person and it bugs them that they don't do anything around the house. Yes, pun intended.

I've got Tucker and he was my first lazy and he talks of bugs all the time. It makes some funny sense, his house literally has a dirt floor.

I just got Wade the penguin 2 days ago. Today was his first mention of bugs, so I have yet to see if it's a big conversation point for him.

I'm caught between "I like it" and "meh". I don't mind it so much but it can be somewhat repetitive.

I find their childishness endearing though. If I were to put myself in the mindset of a small child playing the game for the first time, I could imagine them being more like a peer for the target audience. Some kids may even view the lazy characters as a little brother type, making them (the child) feel more mature.

i dont like bugs irl so i'm not...the biggest fan of it 😅 it was a shock to me when zucker started talking abt them like boy ur personality used to talk abt sleeping & eating almost exclusively and now bugs? bugs??

I feel like the Lazy personality changed a lot from NL. Not necessarily for the better. When I first heard Erik (or was it Rex?) talking about feeding the bugs on his floor and watching their nest grow, I found myself forcing an uncomfortable smile... I assumed it was going to be one piece of dialogue I was (hopefully) going to forget... but it seemed like he kept talking and talking about his “bug friends.” Also about how “everything he wears looks like a napkin after a few hours,” and how he often tended to say “Gee, it sure smells like ME around my house.”

I recently moved Rodeo, one of my favorite villagers, into New Horizons via an Amiibo card, and as he is a Lazy type, he also says and does the same things. He likes to lick the tasty stains from his stained shirts. He calls them “snack echoes.” He has said that he can make himself smell like any sort of food he can think about, “even when he hasn’t had that food in weeks,” and in a conversation with Portia about fragrances, Portia mentioned he smelled of old spaghetti sauce. I love Rodeo, but he fell from grace in this game.

Basically, I dislike like this new sloppy trait that the Lazy villagers seemed to have written with in New Horizons. It implies that they’re frankly dirty and unhygienic. I can see how they thought it was funny, but I honestly kinda find it gross. Punchy is my favorite Lazy villager and I’ve never had him in New Horizons, and honestly I almost don’t want to, if I have to see him acting like... this.

I would describe the former Lazy personality (In NL at least) almost as “Imagine Garfield, but he’s kind and chill, and wants to be your friend,” because even if Garfield does sit around a lot and love food, he isn’t portrayed as unhygenic and like a slob.

I agree so much with this. I think being lazy is one thing but being unhygenic and talking to bugs all day isn't really that cute. Especially when they start talking about how their clothes get crusty, etc. Not my favourite portrayal, not gonna lie. The food dialogue is cute though
