Hi, okay so before you judge just read aha
I'm kind of 'scared of everything' kind of person if that makes sense, but I love gaming- so I usually stick with 'easy-going' games such as harvest moon, ac, mario, sims, splatoon 2 etc
I really REALLY wanted to get into LoZ as it is such an amazing series so in July 2017 I bought botw for my switch (my first LoZ game), played for about an hour, haven't been back to it since.
I'm pretty sure the reason is because I'm just so scared of everying- the enemies, when it turns dark, EVEN THE MUSIC THAT PLAYS WHEN YOU MEET AN ENEMY- i'm just so scared of it all and I hate it.
It sounds really pathetic when I type it out, but it's true- and it's annoying- I can quite happily watch other people play scary games but I cant even play a stupid LoZ game w/o freaking out.
I really want to conquer this fear because there are so many amazing games out there, but I just can't play them- I've tried forcing myself to play but that didn't really work and I just ended up playing Mario kart instead aha.
I'm thinking of maybe buying LoZ Oot for my DS, simply because I think maybe starting with some of the earlier titles might help me understand the game more (also the graphics are worse so maybe things are less scary?)
Does anybody have any advice on what to do, should I just force myself to play botw in the hope that it'll help cure my 'fear', or just give up completely- idk

I know this is a really dumb thing to ask on an animal crossing forum but I don't really have anybody else to ask and I know there's a lot of LoZ fans on here :)

I don't think Ocarina of Time is a good start in your case; there are a couple of dungeons that are actually pretty creepy, and they terrified me for years when I was little lol. I'd say they're darker than BotW, in all honesty, though I can agree some parts of BotW can be unsettling such as the blood moons and Hyrule Castle. OoT has significantly darker themes, and it does hit you after the first portion of the game.

Have you looked into Wind Waker? It's probably a much safer choice if you want to enjoy a Zelda game, the world and characters are all colourful and friendly. There is one dungeon that you might not like (Earth Temple), but if it makes it any easier for you, you do have a companion during it so you're never really alone. Not sure if that makes a difference for you. There's also Minish Cap, or I suppose any of the older 2D games like the Oracle games, maybe you'd prefer those.

Not trying to put you off OoT though, if you want to try it then by all means go ahead! It is normally a great introduction to the series, but I'm not sure how you'd react to the Shadow Temple/Bottom of the Well (and the Forest Temple to an extent). You can Google those if it gives you a better idea of what kind of environments to expect, but who knows, maybe biting the bullet will help you get over the spooks? BotW is a great game, I really hope you find a way to relax so you can enjoy it. :)

Then you shouldn't play these type of games. Especially DONT PLAY RESIDENT EVIL 7 I WARN YOU. Tbh I've never really gotten into loz games but I prefer you to play the old loz games since the new ones are like that.

Thanks for the advice!
I've been told that OoT is a good introduction to the series, but after looking into it (and what you said) it's actually very creepy and probably not the kind of game I should start off with.
I've thought about windwaker because it does appear to be a bit more lighthearted than the rest in the series but unfortunately i only have a switch and a DS to play on so I can't really play it.
Maybe I should just bite the bullet and finish botw? I paid ?50 for it so I might as well, I know so many people my age who found it not scary at all and have replayed it like 5 times, and yet I haven't even got past kakariko village

TRUST ME I am NEVER even looking at a RE game, or just a horror game in general, think I might just burst into tears and never touch a game again if I did.
maybe i'm just not meant for the loz games, but it's quite a shame because I enjoy the characters and the plot etc
IT'S JUST WHENEVER SOMETHING VAGUELY CREEPY ROLLS UP ON THE SCREEN I GO FULL PANIC MODE

Just as Elvengale said, Ocarina might not be the best place to start if you're easily scared. There are some really creepy enemies (Dead Hands) in the Bottom of the Well are pretty scary and panic inducing. Real horror stuff.

Wind Waker would probably be a better fit because it's quite a bright and colorful game.

Guess I need to buy a wii u then aha

Or a Gamecube. :/

There is a really great one for the 3DS though, A Link Between Worlds, which is more of a classic Zelda. I liked it a lot. Nice visuals and tricky puzzles.

Tbh, if you fear BotW I don?t think there?s any chance of playing or completing OoT. The game is far darker and creepier. I?d say start with Wind Waker, it?s really light and cute. I?m sorry your fears are affecting you like this though :/ I really wish I could help you out

BOTW is like the least scariest out of the franchise. It’s just overwhelming at first because you’re flung into this huge world with nothing and no direction. But I find it a really rewarding game and I think it will help get over your fear, at least a little. The game never really “punishes” you for dying, so you really just learn to play the way you like to (eg. I basically stealthed my way to the first town and avoided all fighting lol) I’m kinda like you, I get spooked easily in games. But by the time I played 30+ hours of BOTW I was aching for more enemy variety and things to fight. Situations I would normally find spooky I’d now jump on it to investigate, because I know if it’s too much for me to handle I can just warp out anyways lol. There’s way too many awesome moments in BOTW so you should definitely go back to it!! I love talking about this game so you can VM me if you ever get stuck somewhere!!

Ocarina was the first LOZ game I played and it straight up traumatized me as a kid, so maybe that’s not the best choice to go to next. But if you wanna experience it just to play it, there’s no shame in using a play through? So you at least know what to expect hahah ;)

Thank you! (I might end up having to vm you a lot if I ever go back to botw aha)
there were times when I played BotW last year where I actually enjoyed it and wasn't scared but I think because I was so early on in the game I was afraid that the first boss was coming up soon and I really didn't want to fight it
Like you, I would just run or stealth my way past enemies and skip out talking to characters or side-quests just because I was in such a hurry to get to a safe-zone before it turned dark, basically meaning I had no experience in combat and coming face-to-face with a boss would pretty much mean I was screwed

Yeah I think OoT is pretty much been ruled out as an option for me atm, I really hope there's a way of me being able to play wind waker at some point but unless they reboot it for the switch I don't think it's going to happen,
I quite like the idea of watching a play through though, maybe if I watch enough I won't be scared of anything anymore (I can dream).

I think i'm going to try going back to botw, take it one step at a time, and try to remind myself that it's just a game

Haha I know what you mean! But don’t worry, the actual “bosses” (the ganon blights) in this game aren’t too hard. And you won’t meet them until you do the Divine beasts. The bosses you meet in the world you can easily run from until you’re better equipped. Weapons are going to be sooo easy to come by later on. If there’s any early advice I can give you, it would be to get stamina vessels over heart containers for your first few shrines. If you’re anything like me and want to run from things quickly hahah and it’s great for exploring.

My favourite beginning moments of this game was discovering kakariko village. I was so traumatized from my first few hours, being severely under equipped and one-shotted left and right that I began to distrust everything. I was exploring a hilly mountainous area at night, fell in the waterfall like an idiot and struggled to swim, got attacked by stals. I remember hearing the music change so I knew there was a village or something but I was still unsure if it was safe... and then I experienced my first blood moon. I had no idea what the hell was going on, I thought I was going to die. When it was over I darted straight to the village and landed on the roof to investigate because I was still skeptical that it was a safe zone LOL. I even thought the first stable I found was evil lol... idk those horse heads from a distance were super creepy to me at first lol. But moments like that just make me love the game.

I'm pretty sure that I spent so long in kakariko village (I was to scared to leave and progress) that I experienced my first blood moon there?
I heard from some of the NPC's that all the enemies come back to life and I was just like NOPE gonna sit this one out.
I 100% agree with you on why I think botw is scary to me, it's because it's so open and right at the start you just feel so vulnerable and under-equipped- you're basically dumped into this giant world and I (having never played a LoZ game before) just panicked and shut the game off to start with. I'm so used to games with obvious directions like mario, that anything with side-quests or open worlds just freak me out because I don't know what to do.
I think I just need to embrace the game more and get more involved because if I'm anything like you I should learn to love it.

Why do I feel as though this thread has been like the most useful counselling session ever?, I feel like a new person :)

P.S the one time I went exploring I accidently chucked my horse over a cliff

Well one thing the other zelda games are way harder then botw, for me botw is the most easy zelda game. And botw is a way completely a different zelda game btw and it isn't really have a good story in botw and so it doesn't feel like the real zelda games.
But I say maybe A Link between worlds is a good start or Wind Waker, and Toon Link games are a good start for you.

Honestly, I think being scared of BotW makes it more fun! Just remember that the enemies are actually quite goofy looking, and SPOILERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR:

You can actually get something to disguise with them, and they actually turn out to be quite nice and curious (just remember to keep the disguise on lol). Although there is the well-known enemy of the game, the Guardian, that is actually the embodiment of scaring you out of your wits xD, but racing on a horse and running away feels so amazing, you'll love it (hopefully)!

BACK TO REGULAR PROGRAMMING:

Anyway, my point is that BotW would actually be a decent start to the overcoming your fear. If you ever get scared of night time and monsters popping out, get some materials to make a campfire and speed up time until morning. As you play, the game won't be so intimidating, and plus, if your riding on a horse, enemies don't stand a chance. Plus, the game is just so peaceful during the day, that it would be a shame to miss out! Just give it a shot! Good Luck!

P.S. I do NOT recommend Ocarina of Time for your fears. There's a type of enemies that will legit make you pee your pants.

Ya know, maybe horses aren't the BEST idea ^^'

Omg reading those puns have made my day so much better!
I have definitely come across the guardian before and it took me quite a while to realise that it?s easier to just run away than fight it.
I guess you?re right about making the enemies looking stupid, just need to tell myself that bobolokins are manic pigs instead.
usually I do just skip to day time whenever it turns to night but hopefully the more I play the less scared I?ll become, especially if I am just riding around on a horse and running away from everything (the horse over the cliff thing has only happened once I promise)

Are you talking about those super creepy things at the end of the shadow temple? I took one look and was like NOPE

Don?t worry I think i?ll play every other loz game before oot (my heart would appreciate it)

I agree that Botw is pretty terrifying at the beginning. The first thing I did at the beginning was accidently walk off the cliff right after leaving the Shrine of Ressurection. I wasn't playing for 2 minutes and I killed myself. I also died a lot to easy enemies and pretty much just ran every time I saw a Moblin. Moblins are especially terrifying because groups of them tend to make my game lag on the Wii U version. Sometimes it would freeze briefly as they were swinging at me and then I just sat there wondering when I would get hit.

I recommend trying to help the Zoras first if you decide to try it again. The enemies in that area aren't that hard and Mipha's power is basically a free reusable fairy. I felt better going into scary fights with an extra life.

I also agree with try Wind Waker if you want a less scary Zelda game. Link makes so many funny faces in that game so a lot of the time it doesn't feel as serious. The only scary part for me was occasionally finding sharks while sailing since they try to knock you off your boat.

God I've played GTA a lot- but to be fair the only thing I do is steal cars and rob banks

Aghh I wish wind waker would be remade for the switch so i could try it out!
nintendo needs to get on that

Play Breath of the Wild. I don't enjoy horror films or zombie games at all but I had no issues with BotW. There's no gore and most enemies can be defeated using a range weapon like the bow.

There are some scary bits - I was shook when I experienced my first blood moon! - but the game is such fun.

The most lighthearted and relaxing game out of the bunch is Majora's Mask. It's full of outgoing, welcoming characters and the environments are incredibly peaceful to look at. There's also Twilight Princess to consider.

(Sorry, couldn't resist!)

But in all seriousness, I'd say a good LoZ game for a casual and rather wacky experience is Link's Awakening. It features a lot of cute Easter eggs and cameos! Not to mention the adorable Animal Village!
