Museum Question

I've been reading online about unlocking the Museum Second Floor (Gift Shop) and found different requirements. I was hoping you could please clarify what exactly is require to unlock this?
I have the 20 items, with at least one item in each of the four exhibit categories (fish, insects, fossils, and art).
Is it true you need to talk to him each day for 14 days? What counts as talking to him and when will I find him thinking?

As far as I know, you just have to make sure you have at least one item donated to each category. Then, when Blathers is awake (after 6pm) you'll see the (...) bubble around his head. Talk to him, and he will suggest the 2nd floor.

No problem! I don't think it takes more than one day after making the donations for him to suggest, just gotta make sure he's awake

Can't seem to get him to request it, I guess the 14 day thing is true.
Can anyone confirm this please?

your mayor (not any other alt character you have) has to talk to Blathers for 14 days. They don't have to be consecutive. After that when you go back he should have the bubble with ... on the top of his head. He doesn't have to be awake at 6pm and afterwards for this. But just don't stop at donating with 20 items keep continuing

I think he still can do the "..." when he's sleeping - since I set my game behind the actual date and change the time manually I usually play anywhere around 10 am - 2 pm in-game and remember getting that during that time.

If you still have things left to donate, the easiest way to go talk to him I think would be to just go and donate one item a day until he ends up doing it.

It doesn't have to be after 6 PM. It can be any time of day I'm almost sure! He requested mine around 9 AM.
