I read an article relating to getting whipped, etc. about a week ago and I always thought that spanking, whipping, getting slapped stopped about 100 years ago.

Hm... I think whipping (If we're referring to an actualy whip) is a bit harsh under an circumstance for a kid, but a little good old-fashioned spanking never hurt anybody... Except the kid getting spanked.
I don't think it's as bad as they make it out to be. I got whipped as a kid and I turned out to be a fine, responsible person - not some violent sociopath. Granted, sometimes an official can go overboard and wind up hurting a child if they lose their temper. Spanking is more about the shock and embarrassment of being punished in such a manner than it is about pain, I think. I mean, yeah it hurts for a little, but it stings your pride much longer than your bum.
I don't personally understand why people seem to be more uptight about punishing kids these days. If they do something wrong and won't listen - I say, go for it. :-/
