i'm only planning to have nine bear cubs (all of the ones in my avatar--the original image is here btw) in my town. i want to have a 10th spot open for villagers of any kind, to cycle out and give to people here on the forums. kind of like the villager is vacationing.

this creates a couple problems, though. one is that, if i want to cycle them out quickly, i can never talk to them, even if i like the villager. another is that it's unpredictable when that villager would move in, which means i can't plot reset and could have important parts of my town destroyed. (paths can be fixed after they move out, but what about flower fields and small orchards?)

also, i don't know a lot about cycling. i managed to get clyde to move out of aoki pretty quickly, but that was a one-time thing.

would this be a good idea? and if so, is there anything i should know about mini-cycling?

I don't think that would be a good idea for the reason that you said, it would destroy your town. Maybe buy another cartridge of the game for the purpose of giving them away.

I do mini cycling now and then, I'm going to do it again in a bit actually. But I'm not concerned about plot resetting anymore as I just can't seem to get it right and I haven't the patience!

It depends what you mean by doing it quick really, I manage to do one villager every half an hour or so. I only do it to get rid of unwanted villagers though, I have some im keeping so I do it slow, try to get two out then I leave the 10th spot (whic is why I'm doing it again in a bit seeing as my 10th spot is now taken).
Maybe give it a go and go slowly at first until you get more confident in what you're doing.
Obviously there aren't any guarantees but I'd say yes, it's not a bad idea :-)

One every half an hour feels quick to me but obviously you're doing something different with your town x

this could be a good idea, but it kind of depends on how confident you are in your TT'ing skills. first off, your tenth villager can only move in through someone's void, adopting them from the campsite, or from someone else's town; so when they plotted wouldn't be unpredictable at all. it would actually be 100% predictable because there's no chance of a random move-in as your tenth villager.
secondly, talking to the villager doesn't really make a difference in how quickly they'll move. from my experience and from many others', villagers you are good friends with are just as likely to move as ones you ignore. i'm pretty sure who moves is just random each time, and there's no real way to decide it. there's also the theory that the tenth villager you move in is the hardest to move out, but i haven't found that to be true in every case.
in my opinion, i think leaving your tenth space open can be a good idea or a bad idea, depending on you. leaving that space open does give you the chance you grab someone good from the campsite and sell/give them away when they move, BUT it also poses the risk of you getting someone's voided villager accidentally. that is the only time a plot would be unpredictable/unable to be plot reset and then ruin your paths or orchards.

all in all, i don't think this would be a good idea, at least not without some changes in your plan. i also am not sure if constantly having villagers moving in and out of a town with paths & designs is a good idea either, because even if you plot reset, there's always a chance you'll forget or mess up and get stuck with their plot in a terrible spot. regardless of what you choose to do, good luck! c:

here & here are guides that may help you move specific villagers out or just generally give you more information on how to do it as successfully as possible.

Remember that the last to move in won't move out until so,even comes behind so if your happy with 8 perms then yeah I say it is a good idea..I am considering starting to cycle myself to help others but I'm not sure what is holding me back, maybe if I had help setting it up to be very clear with rules and simple and easy so it just flows from someone experienced...I think I would enjoy it but some of my starters have changed shirts already I will just be sure it doesn't happen with the others and I am still only a few days in so I may or may reset it and then cycle but only if I feel the thread is well done I have seen many just get buried while I would be constantly on go speed..so I don't know I would need a cycling mentor in the start and maybe see how it goes..it's one thing I've always wanted to try and haven't and if it didn't work I could always turn it to a town. But yes I think your idea is good if you want to try it.
