I usually tailor it to whatever I know the person celebrates, and if I don't know I just go with happy holidays. But personally, I don't really care what people say to me, because it's with good intentions. :3
I don't really think there is anything wrong with wishing people happy whatever you celebrate, just don't get annoyed when someone doesn't celebrate it and doesn't wish the same thing back . I saw someone get annoyed by a store clerk for using happy holidays after he and said merry Christmas and that is for lack of better words, stupid.
