Mailing Villagers Clothing

I want to change my villager's attire, but I'm not sure how to go about it.
If I mail someone a shirt, will they change into it or just put it in their home?
Does anyone have a good method for changing their outfits?

It only seems to work for me if it's something of their style and were really good friends. Sometimes they just display it in their house.

So, say you want them to change into a red shirt and they're wearing a blue shirt. You send two red and they'll change into the red one? Will the other appear in their home? Will the blue later appear in the home?

I sent all my villagers a military uniform.
Out of all of them, Bunnie, Francine, Mira and Doc refused to wear them. Celia did at first as well, but she later changed into it.
(All my rabbits refused B( ) Fauna as well, and they all have them displayed in their homes

Same. When I had Marina in my first town, we were really good fiends (got he pic) and she wore the strawberry shirt I gave her. But adopting an entirely different Marina for another town of mine, I sent her the same shirt and she only displayed it >.<

I'm wondering if sending them two of the same shirt forces them to wear it.
One is placed in their home, but because one is a duplicate, they wear it instead?

One way is to put the shirt in your inventory then fill every other space with an item villagers won't buy/trade such as bell bags, flowers, etc. Keep talking to them and eventually they should ask to either buy the shirt or trade you something for it, and next if you're lucky they'll put the shirt on right away. Sometimes they don't though, I don't know if your friendship level has anything to do with whether or not they'll put it on or if it's entirely random.

I'm definitely closest with Lionel in my town. I send him a present every day. Normally its just fruit but I sent him a tan dogtooth tee and he put it on instantly. I think it might be to do with friendship.

I don't know if it has to do with friendship. They day Jitters moved in I sent him some mail with a shirt attached and the very next day he was wearing what I sent him. There's no way we were best friends at that point xD

i'm pretty sure you just have to send them two copies of the same shirt. they'll display one in their house, and then they'll wear the second one. that's what i do with chrissy and tia when they keep on changing outfits. thank god marshal hasn't changed outfits b/c i don't have his original denim shirt catalogued. ;n;

edit: fun fact! most villagers wear their shirts as tank tops, but you can send them any version of the top (long sleeve, short sleeve, etc etc etc) and it won't matter to them.

I know about the tank tops, anyway, I'm gonna talk to Punchy a lot, and then send him a letter with the orginal cherry top he wore in the 1st AC, so he can look like that

Ken wore the barber tee I gave him for a long time when I wrapped it up and gave it to him in a letter!

I don't know if friendship has anything to do with it, but hopefully it does. I can see the 2 of the same method working as well. You might also want to check the types of presents the villager likes. Maybe they'll be more inclined to wear a shirt if it matches the style and color they like.

I sent wolfgang a shirt and I think I'm only halfway up to being a best friend so we'll see what happens.

My villagers wear the same thing most all the time. If they change, it's a pro item from Anytown.
