Absolutely awful luck with special islands. Only been to a hybrid island once, money rock island 2 times and a pond island 2 times as well. I've been trying to find islands with cedar trees for the past 3 days and having no luck there either. As for villagers, I've found Merengue, Kabuki and Bill on there. Two which are fairly popular, in hopes of making someone happy once I give them away and Bill who is just an old childhood friend of mine I haven't seen since the GC game.
When I was island hopping to get my first 5 villagers, I basically hit the jackpot for people who like to sell/pimp out villagers. Of my first 10 islands I ran into Stitches, Lucky, Diana, Whitney, Vivian, Molly and Reneigh. The others were Derwin, Bubbles and Shep.
The only villager I took in was Reneigh because my goal was to find one of the 'new 8'.
As for the types of islands...I usually have to spend 3 NMTs to hit a good one. I've got the tarantula/scorpion multiple times and the money rocks multiple times. I've never seen a hybrid island, or the Coelacanth island.
I’ve gotten a lot of bamboo islands, and hybrid islands before they were patched out. I also got Cyd and Judy in my first ten trips to Mystery islands. I feel pretty lucky about finding them c:
I haven’t gone island hopping a lot, but my luck has been okay I think. I found Wolfgang, Freya, Dom and Ankha all of whom I invited. I also found Dobie but didn’t want too many wolves. Sometimes I had to burn through more tickets than others.
I found the hybrid island once too, but I heard those are gone now. </3
I haven’t kept track of how many NMTs I’ve used, but probably 30-40.
Got hybrid island once; money rock island 3 times; bamboo island twice. The rest were junk or plain islands.
I went villager hunting a couple days ago. Hopper was on the very first island. I scooped him up because I love the crankies, & I never had him in my CF or NL towns.
I get good rare islands but honestly don’t care (unless it’s money rock island ofc because moneyy gimme gimme). I honestly wish I got bamboo island more so i could get bamboo shoots to make lamps.
Villagers are pretty good too! I got Zell after looking for Apollo and Kyle and omG I love him. Only took 8 NMTs and passed some fan favorites.
I feel like I've been quite lucky as I have encountered popular villagers often, though less so now that I have a few of the most popular villagers living on my island.
My luck sucks when it comes down to villagers but not too bad when it comes down to variety of islands. I think, in total I've visited at least 400 or so islands. I've only encountered Sherb as the only new villager.
I've been exceptionally lucky in terms of finding villagers on islands. Starting the game and moving in the initial set of starting villagers, I found Poppy, Fauna, Nan and Chevre. Later when someone moved out I went island-hopping and got Tom on like the 4th or 5th island I visited. Next time someone moved out, I went island hopping again and on the 3rd island I visited, saw a white shape moving through the bamboo. Thinking it was either Bones or the villager I was specifically looking for - Ruby - I excitedly ran towards the distant figure and who should I find but Marshal! I was really hoping for Ruby, but I happily took Marshal rather than get someone awful.
I guess it helps that I'm not too fussy about what villagers I get, so long as it's not someone I hate. So it doesn't take me long to find a villager that's acceptable to me.
I think I used about 30 NMT for Mystery Islands so far, and I got the Tarantula Island as well as the Money Island once. Yesterday someone moved out, so I used my NMT to search for a new (nice) villager. Don't care who, as long as I like him/her. Got Pietro on the 5th try so I was pretty happy.

Quite lucky with villagers, found Dom, Raymond, Sherb, Reneigh, Cyd and Audie on mystery islands!
I feel like my luck has been fair for the small amount of times I've gone. I've been to bamboo island, hybrid island, and money rock island a few times. I've also bumped into Raymond to trade him for a dream villager.
I've been pretty lucky in an unlucky way. Other than the fruit island, I've never been to any of the rare islands because I've always managed to find a villager that I wanted in 4 NMTs or less... today I had 70 NMTs saved up and was excited to go on island tours to meet new villagers and maybe find a rare island but I found one of the villagers on my dreamie list on my 2nd NMT -_- Although that 2nd NMT is where I encountered the fruit island. I already had the fruit tho so not very useful.
