Maybe I'm looking back with rose-colored glasses as well, but I remember back in NL people would abuse duplication... to do giveaways. Lots of bells to newbies, sharing region-locked items, etc. People were also upfront about the fact the items were glitched so you could choose to if you wanted to buy/receive them or not. This time it seems to be to solely to make money, and people are lying by omission -- selling duplicate items without specificying they're duped, which rubs me the wrong way. At least they make it really obvious, selling every single Gulliver item in one post like no one will figure it out?
yes, I recall giveaways from AC "businesses/shops" with duplicated items too. seemed like nobody had much of a problem with that, but perhaps that was because 1) these giveaways only started around the middle of NL's lifespan as the current mainline AC game, 2) it wasn't explicitly stated the items were duplicated, but like you say it was obvious and 3) it was a giveaway service and there was no intent to financially exploit those on the receiving end. although it still probably ruined whatever "economy" that was established at that point (or really, whatever was left of it). i suspect NH will follow a similar course unless nintendo is intent on patching every duplication glitch
