Lief hasn't given me my Golden Axe?

So I started my village on August 16th. Lief opened on the 22nd. I've been buying saplings from him pretty much ever since. I think I only missed one or two days, and that's because he was closed (to merge with T.I.Y.). Does he only start the counter when you've opened T&T Emporium or what? I know you have to buy 50 saplings from him, so by all logic I should have it by now.

Maybe you miscounted? Leif talked to me automatically after I bought my 50th sapling, but I didn't really start buying in earnest until after Emporium opened.

Alright. I probably did. Does anyone know if he'll still talk to you if you have your inventory full (after buying your 50th sapling, I mean)? Cuz I have bought, in the past few days, saplings and cedars but after buying them, my inventory was full.

I think he will say your invertory is full, asking you to make room, and come back??? I can't remember, this happened to me once if I recall with one of the tools from him. o.o;

Or he won't let you purchase the item till you have two spaces free.
