With the revelation that Nintendo will be offering a Must-Be-Connected-To-The-Internet-To-Play streaming service for NES games, today is a very sad day. The Virtual Console service is officially dead and gone :(

So today, in fond memory of this service my discussion question is two-fold:

1. What are some Game Boy/Game Boy Color games you wish had come to the 3DS Virtual Console?

2. What are some Super Nintendo games you wish had come to the New 3DS XL Virtual Console?

For me, the GB/GBC library could've benefited from Final Fantasy Adventure, Tetris Attack, Yoshi's Cookie, Castlevania II: Belmont's Revenge, Operation C, Wave Race and Magical Drop (I believe that came to North America back in the day?)

For the Super Nintendo library I wish we had gotten: Kirby Super Star, Final Fantasy II, Final Fantasy III, ActRaiser, Yoshi's Island, Super Mario RPG: Legend Of The Seven Stars, Super Mario All-Stars, Tetris Attack, Yoshi's Cookie, Chrono Trigger, Secret Of Mana, StarFox, StarFox 2 (if it's good enough for the Super Nintendo Classic, it's good enough for the Virtual Console) HyperZone, Bust-A-Move and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles In Time (despite that last one being highly unlikely since Nickelodeon now owns the rights to the franchise).

Rest in peace, Virtual Console. You will be greatly missed by us Retro Gaming Lovers.

I was hoping they would start releasing Gamecube games for virtual console, since I'm not sure how much time mine have left. They've been treated well over the years, but they're really old disks.

I would have loved to have the original Animal Crossing on the 3ds. It's not like there were technical limitations. The file size is so small you don't even need the disk after the game is finished loading.

That would be pretty awesome. I dunno how old the discs for my GameCube are either. All I know is the majority of everything I currently own for it still works. A few games I haven't popped into the system in a while, but what I have played seems to work.

During the first few years of Wii, the indie gaming scene wasn't a big enough deal for Nintendo to not push their Virtual Console strategy to its fullest, with plentiful of retro games coming on a weekly basis. Once WiiWare finally took off in 2008, they began allotting lesser and lesser resource for VC as years went on.

And here we are now, with the access to an ever-growing library of select NES games behind monthly/yearly online paywall, or tracking down the Classic Edition consoles. Although you still get to access many of the essential games from older system, those wanting to delve deeper into retro gaming will have to go through even more hoops than an average gamer would bother.

Some people complained the pricing of VC games being rather expensive, considering the service operates on a lesser accurate software emulation. For example, buying 30 $4.99 NES titles would cost about $150 without taxes, while NES Classic Edition would be priced less than half of the total for the same amount of games.

As for the Game Boy games I'd like to see on 3DS, I feel like the current library of games here was enough, outside of the lack of Castlevania II: Belmont's Revenge and Metal Gear Solid: Ghost Babel. Not that Game Boy games are necessarily bad games on their own, but time isn't exactly kind to them. There are already many similar but much improved games on technically superior consoles.

For SNES games on New 3DS models, it's difficult for me to choose, especially when I own many SNES games that I wanted. I might as well say import the entire Wii and Wii U catalog for New 3DS owners to play, but it's kinda late for that to be profitable.

Isn't that on Switch only, or where'd you get it's for all current consoles?

But yeah, I sure wish they'd release that old Puyo Puyo game in the West, freakin' obscure series, I love it. And yeah Yoshi's Cookie is da bomb.

“NO players do not want virtual console. They want innovation. they want to play with card board”

*meanwhile retailers are overstocked with labo and sold out of snes/nes classics*

this exact irony too smfh. nintendo you are just being more n more stupid

I personally am not really affected by it because I buy retail copies of older games instead of digital copies, but it really is stupid that they would do away with VC. I liked it partly because if a game was super expensive (like Donkey Kong Country on SNES or Super Smash Bros on N64 yeah I'm kinda weird about spending more than $20 on an old game) the I could get it on VC much cheaper and play that until I managed to get a retail copy. Also the idea of being able to play an N64 game anywhere I went sounded like a p cool idea.

But idk maybe they have another idea in store. Or maybe they need to start putting out more NES/SNES Classic Edition consoles...

Don't get me wrong, having a library of games where you pay 20 a year to access is nice, but it's really the online only thing that gets me. I'm huge fan of Gaming On The Go, and the fact that I can play retro games anytime, anywhere without having to worry about the cartridge's save battery dying is awesome...but what if I want to play say Super Mario Bros. 3 on a road trip and in the car, I don't have the ability to access the internet while on the road with people?

I can understand the pricing issue though...I just think Nintendo should consider making retro titles available offline as well. Though if they did revive VC, price drops WOULD be nice too. Either way, at least the streaming service still means we can get a retro fix. I just wonder if the 20 titles will be rotated out like Netflix or stay in the library and more get added over time. If they mentioned anything about that, I missed that part in the stuff I read.

The streaming service is Switch only as far as I know, but despite Nintendo's recent announcement to continue supporting the 3DS, they have yet to announce the continuation of Virtual Console on the system...not to mention, prior to the release of the second generation Pokemon games in September of last year and January of this year (I think that's when Crystal came out), the last VC they dropped on the 3DS was Castlevania: Dracula X in December 2016, so it's really just an educated guess that VC is a thing of the past. I HOPE I'd be wrong in this case though.

I don't really mind as much as before since I can just use my 3DS and Wii U to play some older games. Bonus for the fact I can take the 3DS everywhere.

Oh and $20 a year is rather annoying but at least it isn't anything crazy like say, $50 or $70 a year.

I just wish there were more Super Nintendo games on the new 3DS XL to be honest. A lot of my favorites never hit the eShop for handheld play.

Same or they were only release in Japan. Um hello ninty what's so hard getting them here? Oh wait I forgot you are slowly killing it.

Where Japanese exclusive Super Nintendo games are concerned I'd go for Final Fantasy 5, Mega Man And Bass, Gundam Wing: Endless Duel, Clocktower and Mario & Wario. Assuming they'd make mouse based games like that last one available on any Virtual Console (I know Duck Hunt eventually came to the Wii U in its original NES state, and I think the Wii Zapper was compatible with it...dunno though).

Let's face it, guys. Switch Virtual Console was never going to be a thing. I had a hunch with the New Nintendo 3DS line and the fact that USUM were the final Pok?mon games on it. Basically, Nintendo says if you didn't get your mitts on a Wii, Wii U and any 3DS/2DS family member you missed your one chance of playing Earthbound and Smash 64.

Unless, like, you're not like me who once OWNED a SNES and N64 but lost them (or parents sold them) as a kid, and you still own yours. Get out there and get a used copy of Paper Mario!!

Also, RIP Gamecube Virtual Console

My biggest complaint with old school cartridges is the save battery. Sure people say they last ten to fifteen years but is that really going to be the lifespan if you play nonstop? I legitimately don't know.

Virtual Console is a big thing though. I'm surprised Ninty decided to kill it off. But if this new classic games service takes off and manages to go beyond just NES games, MAYBE they'll make some ability to play the games offline as well.

Yeah, NES games were meant to be played offline with IRL multiplayer lol so why are they even offering them like this *whacks head*

Honestly the majority of VC games I just bought because I felt the need to spend my credit leftovers from eShop cards, I never really got much out of them. Except for maybe Game & Watch Gallery 2 but that's it.

I'd only care about VC if they add in GameCube games tbh.

Game & Watch Gallery 2 was my favorite of the three Game Boy/Game Boy Color era ones.

I think Gamecube VC would've been good for the Switch. With people talking about damaged discs and all, now's the time to start digitizing everything from Luigi's Mansion to Custom Robo to the GCN Animal Crossing.

Virtual Console would have been highly desirable on the Switch. Like the on the Wii and Wii U, the VC was neat, but I knew that I'd just be buying it for those consoles and didn't feel too compelled to really go all out. However, when it comes to the Switch, having all of my favorite classics on a system that can both be hooked up to the TV and also played portable is just very compelling.

I do not understand why when Nintendo has something so great they have to turn around and shoot themselves in the foot.

A subscription service is something that has its ups, but it also has its downs. Personally, I just have a select number of games that I want to PURCHASE and not rely on a subscription service that will inevitably die. I want to own Paper Mario 64 and TTYD permanently on my Switch. A subscription service will not only inevitably die someday, but it also is never a stable service of the same titles you want at all times. Just look at Netflix - they cycle through movies and shows.

Besides, a subscription service like a lot of people are suggesting is optimistic speculation that isn't really based on anything that Nintendo has said - correct me if I'm wrong. The online benefits classics have always been "NES games, with the possibility of SNES games". The idea that this would expand to games beyond that does seem somewhat inevitable, but we do not know for sure. The fact that the service is starting with nothing but NES games is NOT a good sign.

How long would it even take for us to see N64 games and beyond? I... just want to purchase them. I may be old-fashioned, but why can't we just do things like music? You have services like Spotify to stream, but you also have services like iTunes and Amazon where you can purchase the same songs to own. It's not an either or kind of deal. Even though it seems like Nintendo and a lot of the fandom is pretending it has to be. *sigh*

As someone who plays mostly older games, I think it freaking sucks. I spend a lot of time in my office so I frequently take my portables along with me at work. Wellllllll the beautiful thing about virtual console was it had a lot of great games. Sometimes I'll spend some time playing a newer release and then I'll switch over to a game I got via virtual console, so i guess it's back to bringing my old Gameboy Color and GBA with me everywhere. Suppose I'll bring my snes mini and hook it up to my TV there too

?\_(ツ)_/?
