I currently have 9 villagers in my town, and I'm waiting for a villager I reserved through a cycling town to decide to move. I've had this spot open for two days, and I'm really worried that if I wait too long, some random villager will move in. In case someone does show up, is there any way for me to get them out? I've heard of the new save file glitch to move villagers' plots, and I've heard one case in which this glitch caused a villager never to show up again, but is there a way to guarantee that? Thanks in advance!

A tenth villager won't move in unless you invite them from the Campsite or another player's town. :) You can keep the slot open as long as you like and no one will move in. In fact, you could stay at 9 villagers forever if you wanted, haha.

Actually, I believe a tenth villager can move in on their own if you go too long without a certain personality type.

For example, recently I had my tenth spot open for a while but I had no Lazy villagers in town. I logged on a few days ago and Stitches home was being built. He didn't come from my campsite because he was never there and he didn't come from streetpass or a friend's town because he didn't mention coming from a different town. He was just sort of there.

So I think the game may default you a tenth villager if you don't have a certain personality type. You can go a while with just nine though. I had only nine villagers for a good few weeks before Stitches came around.

I'm not sure about the personality type incident, but I haven't gone too long without being at 10. However, I currently don't have any smugs in my town though, and haven't for a few months. It would be weird if one randomly popped up.

I also want to add that you can get a villager from the void of someone else's town, so be careful with who you connect with when you only have 9 if you want to keep your 10th spot open!

This. A thousand times this. I can't tell you how many villagers I've picked up from my mother's void.

Don't use your Wi-Fi for anything until you get the villager you want. Random villagers can move in via Streetpass or other people's void.

wait, seriously? i had 9 villagers for like 4 months

I don't think that a 10th villager can move if you're without a certain personality type. I think the personality type thing applies to the villagers the game moves in automatically (when you have less than 9 villagers).

You can get a 10th villager randomly without inviting them if you pick them up from someone's void, though. If you're concerned about that, don't wifi with people (especially people who have voided villagers before) and switch off Streetpass until you get the villager you want.

Something else that helps is starting the game with a new character every time you load the game on a new day (before loading with an existing one). After your character arrives at the station for the first time, walk around town carefully and check for a plot. If there isn't one, you can go through the steps to save your game with that character (I recommend putting their house in an area you don't see often and sticking to it, so you won't end up with muddy patches all over your town). If there's a plot, don't go to the town hall, just quit without saving and try again. You don't have to pick any special answers when going through the train sequence with Rover since you can delete that character anyway. You may be able to at least delay it or know that you'll have a move-in. If it's unavoidable, you can set your 3DS clock back to the day before and use your mayor to invite someone else, I think.

You should be alright if you don't streetpass, don't wifi, and obviously don't invite anyone from the campsite!
