Happy New Year! Welcome to 2014!
January is very quiet on New Leaf, so it?s the perfect time to do some landscaping or to make some serious progress with your catalogue and badge collection.
Here?s a brief run-down on what to expect:
Some of the seasonal changes you?ll experience..
-The town tree remains stark.
However, the leaves on the other trees turn green on January 16th!
I know some of you will be thrilled by this turn of events
- The Christmas lights on your cedar trees will come down on the 3rd. Booo!
- Snow will fall less frequently than it did around Toy Day.
- Snowflakes will continue to appear, provided it is either snowing or you have a Snowmam in your town.
If you already have all of the Icy furniture from Snowmam, then you can still sell the snowflakes for 500 bells at Re-Tail.
- The two daily snowballs will continue to appear all through January. If you aren?t a master at making snow people, then you will be soon!
Even masters still need a point of reference sometimes. This website shows the correct dimensions for the four different snow people; (click here)
- Auroras will continue to appear on random nights, at 8:45PM, 9:30PM, 10:15PM, or 11PM.
It?s well worth keeping an eye out for them, they are truly a beautiful sight to see!
Other important things this month...
Spoiler:
- You get a letter from Mom/Dad with a random gift attached on the 1st Jan.
- From the 1st til now, you can get your paws on a Sunrise Lamp. Simply ask about a present in the Post Office! Confirmed for EU and US.
- From the 21st til Feb the 20th (presumably) you can receive an Aquarius Urn at the Post Office. EU only
Bug & Fish Catches this Month..
Spoiler:
There are literally no changes from December.
For the sake of continuity, here are the lists for this month?s catches;
BUGS
http://uk.ign.com/wikis/animal-crossing-new-leaf/January_Bugs
Pretty pathetic list, I?m afraid. If you?re having trouble with the dung beetle, leave your daily snowballs lying around until you see one of them moving. Then pounce!
FISH
http://uk.ign.com/wikis/animal-crossing-new-leaf/January_Fish
Keep an eye out for the elusive river Stringfish. It has a distinctly long shadow, and sells for a whopping 15,000 bells!
DIVING
Hurray, we now have month by month diving lists, courtesy of the brilliant epiktetos!
Just (click here) and scroll down to the appropriate month.
The most notable catches this month are the large crabs that you?ll find in the sea of your town. They have huge shadows and move quite quickly.
There are a number of other great resources that you can use to keep track of your bug and fish catches. Here are a couple:
This website lets you input the date and time and spits out a list of everything you can catch at that time.
This is one of the better checklists out there that you can make use of.
The creator of it has a printable version on his blog: http://geckonori.tumblr.com/search/acnl
If you?re smartphone inclined, then this free app is ridiculously useful. Not only for bugs and fish, but all things AC:NL related. An iOS version is also available.
Next up is a wee list of events this month..
Spoiler:
1st January - New Year?s Day
Today there?s a 4-man photo board set up in the plaza. Get some friends over and take some silly snaps!
You?ll also be able to collect a Chinese Zodiac Animal from Isabelle there. This year, is the Year of the Horse.
16th January - New Leaf
All of your trees will sprout some fresh, new leaves on this day. Rejoice!
18th January - Fishing Tourney
You probably know the drill when it comes to Fishing Tourneys, but here?s a guide just in case - (click here)
This time around, Chip will ask for Horse Mackerels, Pond Smelts, or Sea Bass
And that?s around about it! Told you it was a quiet month

Otherwise, feel free to share your January experiences and screenshots.
