I've occasionally gone on my town just to pluck weeds, talk to villagers, and that's it. I'm otherwise bored, and was wondering if there's anything I could or should do.
It really depends on what you like to do or what you are willing to do. I wouldn't suggest starting your save file over, especially seeing how many people say that they regret doing that. However, I hit the same wall that you did. I had my dreamies, my town was designed, etc. But now I'm going for those last few public works projects that I want, moving in different villagers while moving some of my dreamies out to good homes, I'm building new public works projects and tearing down a lot of my old ones, and I'm just generally redesigning my town and going for a whole different theme. I had my town the way I wanted it for about.. 4 years?.. until I decided that I wanted some change. I'm also going on a mission to get every animal's picture and dedicating a house to it, just as an appreciation thing to the cute little guys. I've also been working on getting some badges and visiting dream addresses just to relax and have some fun as well.
What got me playing again was creating a different town theme. I got really bored of playing about a year ago and only checked every few months. I then started spending my free time visiting other people?s Dream Addresses to get ideas of town themes that I really liked. After a few weeks of saving ideas and my favorite QR codes that I found, I totally redid my town, including the landscape, PWP?s, and character houses. It took patience because of having to customize different objects with Cyrus. I also created a second character in my town, and made their house entirely to my new theme, along with my mayor. Doing that has kept me consistently playing for about 6 months now
Also, instead of resetting my town, I decided to order another ACNL game cartridge (they?re like 10-20 bucks on EBay) and create a second town entirely to that theme. That?s also kept me motivated to play. I now check them at least every day because I worked really hard to get my dreamies according to my themes, and I?d be really upset if they moved out! (Although, for some reason when I do play they ask often to move out, but when I didn?t play for a whole year nobody moved out at all -.-)
There's no harm in just taking a break if you get a little bored! Sometimes I find that forcing myself to play makes me burn out even faster, especially "end game" stuff. I don't enjoy completing my catalogues and I find it too tedious to accomplish without constantly getting help from others, which is not ideal for my schedule. In my case, there was a time when I was bored of the game but I really enjoyed puzzle league and I would only log on to play that and ignore everyone else (aside from running around briefly to see if any villagers wanted to move). I was playing puzzle league almost every day but my villagers were still saying they hadn't seen me in a month haha
I don't blame you, the games are notorious for that. Though I'd at least do everything that's open to me first before accessing to that conclusion. The game is virtually a giant collectathon that rides on the whole real time gimmick, and I really do praise it for that in some aspects. You won't see a fish that enjoys a colder climate in the summer, and vice versa. Making the collection probably the most fleshed out collection I've ever seen. You have bugs, fish, art, fossils, furniture, clothes, villagers. I went my first year without any outside knowledge. Getting as much of what I listed above that I can on my own
Then the moment I decided to cheat it was like opening a small universe there was just that much. Furthering on the games ability there's also the community as well. Making all these adorable little path designs to really bring your town to life, and speaking of the community you can also goof off online. I can figuratively bull doze that wall, and say something along the lines of "Ya can't doze off from some bull when I got this bull dozer here!" We a silly bunch indeed.
I’m feeling this too, whenever I log on I feel some sort of presence trying to stop me from playing if you know what I mean? Just unmotivated to. I’d recommend taking a good long break, 1 week, 3 months, whatever makes you feel more comfortable (ღ˘ω˘ღ) I’m also not sure if you time travel or not, but I’d recommend not doing that, I’ve never been a huge time traveler, but when I strictly went day by day in real time, it makes me more motivated to boot up today! And the advice above is also really good, but you should also do whatever you feel like doing, and if that’s resetting or even quitting, go for it (*^▽^)/

I feel like it can get annoying. Over time you can get used to it. I usually take breaks between each time. If you want to keep playing, maybe do badges? Those are impossible especially nowadays. Streetpass is dead.
I'm never planning on resetting my town. I just can't go through all the pain of making it perfect again. Some might find enjoyment from it, but I sure don't. I honestly like my town where it is. I also mostly like hanging out in other friends towns. With new horizons coming soon, I don't see a reason to restart at this point.
I understand how you feel. I've lost a lot of interest in my game, so I pretty much stopped playing. I'm now taking a break from Animal Crossing until the new game comes out. If you want, you can always redecorate your town to fit the season or play with some other members here on TBT. That's the only thing I can think of at the moment. Also, there is nothing wrong with taking a break too.
1. Finish your encyclopedia if you haven?t already (Catch all the fish, bugs, and sea creatures for that season)
2. Redesign your town. Turn it into a bamboo forest, make it look woodsy with qr code rocks, or make it a fairytale town with all the fairytale pwp?s and pink paths.
3. Turn sections of your town into themed areas. I planted a wall of cedar trees and sweet olive bushes so that the area I placed my campsite in would look like a park. I only plant certain flowers. I plan to get the bonfire, log, and picnic blanket pwp?s to complete it.
4. Get inspo from Pinterest and redesign your rooms. You don?t just have to have rooms with one furniture series. I hate most of the different furniture series?s. Go to Cyrus and have him customize different furniture. You can create the most aesthetically pleasing rooms.
Well, it depends on how progressed you are in your town. I always set 'town goals' and add on as a complete the previous. Look up all the pwps and make a list of the ones you want and where. Research some towns- and maybe redesign your whole theme in general. Maybe re-do your house. Whatever feels stale, redesign. You could also try and complete furniture sets, encyclopedias, badges, or unlock things you haven't.
I've seen a lot of people say they regret restarting their town and say that it's not the best option. But if you feel bored with your town a clean slate might be best.
