The border is the variation.

You can only customize the blank white spaces, not the border 
Yes that's how a lot of people do their shelves/walls in their builds! And the border colors aren't customizable as they are the variations of the simple panels so use the panel that will be most effective/blend with the design you're planning on putting on your panels!
