Help understanding customisation

I've recently started a new island after about 5 years.

Trying to get my head around customisation. I came across a nice Plant Partition item on someone else's island and took it.

Various online websites say this item can be customised in a range of colours. They also say this item is not available as a D I Y.

Yet when I used Tom nookies customisation workbench, it does not give me the option to customise it...?

The same applies to several other items I own...

Please can anyone clarify what I can customise? Is it only items I buy from my own nook store?

The items you can customize yourself at a workbench with customization kits are the ones you make with the DIY recipes. Unfortunately not all DIY’s can be
customized.
The items you get from nook’s cranny and nook’s shopping can be customized once you unlock Cyrus’s shop on Harv’s island . You give your items to Cyrus and he can customize them for you for bells.

Some items can't be customised via workbench and need to be taken to Cyrus on Harvs island instead : )
