it took my bells?

I am confused. how do you get them back? it takes them away?
You get them back after you edit the post.
Then it makes no sense for it to take them away in the first place.
Anytime you post something, you earn Bells. The longer it is, the more you get. The shorter it is, the less you get. Editing takes it away.
why does editing a post make me lose bells though? does it take all the bells from that post away or just some? sorry I am new here so I dont know much.
You don't actually lose the bells unless you edit the post to be shorter than it was originally. So long as it's the same length or longer, you get them back post edit. You can view all of your transactions by following the links as shown:

It only takes some away if you do minor edits. They do this so you don't earn more Bells by cheating with editing. If you do major editing to a post, you'll get more.

oh so for every edit it calculates the length of the post. because I made my post longer and it took bells. but thanks anyway.
