Personally, I think Poe isn't as great as he is hyped up to be. His literature is okay, I'm sure there is a fan here who can convince me about his superiority.

On a side note his poem (much less popular than the Raven) called the Bells was enjoyable and I remember liking it the most. Other than that, the Pit and the Pendulum, A Dream Within a Dream, and the Tell-Tale Heart were that impressive.

edit----
Could it just be my preference? I personally like science fiction books/ political fiction (I guess that's what you'd call it)

edit 2----
I'm asking this because I opened a gift and it was a fancy book of tales and poems by Poe, that you Aunt Linda -_-

It's more of literature, not entertaining fiction. Maybe for some.
However, it is, like you said a preference.

people used to get scared by the stupidest stuff back in the day.

That's pretty much what I wanted to say, but then I realized that most people don't develop an appreciation of literature until later in life, if ever.

Edit - Read Kurt Vonnegut, you.

this explains it. But I don't fully understand, the fact that he wrote so well for his time and now makes people like his work. Are you saying what he is writing about isn't so entertaining but the way he writes about it is what is entertaining? I'll ask my English teacher about it, next semester....

I adore Poe's work. The only story of his that I didn't like was the one where the guy was buried alive. The rest were awesome.

"The Cask of Amontillado", right? I liked it....

But I liked that one.:)

Gotta disagree with the OP, here. It would help if you could talk about why exactly you dislike Poe's works...

Well personally I don't find it that entertaining, mostly his short stories. On the other hand I do remember liking his poems...
Like *trevor and Bacon Boy said, it's a matter of it being good literature than being entertaining fiction.

Words cannot explain sometimes how hard I want to punch you in the face, even if you are joking.
