Is there any way to replace a villager's base clothes?

So there are some villagers that have base clothes that I don't really like. Even if you give them something new, it looks like they'll always change back to their basic clothes not long after. Is there a way to get them to wear different clothes permanently? Like, if you give them enough tops that they'll stop wearing the base one?

I hope this makes sense. Answers are appreciated

I dont think you can change their default look but they do change between clothing you give them. Just like you change your outfit every once in a while your villagers want to as well!

I have a villager who wears something I gave him so often that I often forget it's not his default shirt, so I think a character's style and personality also comes into play in how often they wear things. Best tip I have for you is to just load them up on a ton of different items so they have more clothes to cycle through!

I think if you give them clothing in colors/styles they like they'll be more likely to wear it. I haven't seen Filbert's original shirt in weeks.

Pretty much this. I gave Diana a shirt by mistake but apparently I really hit the mark because that’s all she wears now and no matter how many times I complain to Isabelle she refuses to stop wearing it

Is there a lot to how many items you can give them?

(As in, will the newest item eventually start getting rid of the older ones?)

At first I thought they wouldn't stay in an outfit you give them for more than a day or two....

but I noticed Chester wearing a shirt I gave him over a week ago the other day. Also Puddles seems to really like the lively plaid dress I gave her.

On the flip side, I haven't seen Flip wearing a shirt I gave him last week at all...so I must have missed the mark. Also Hazel stopped wearing the Tam o Shanter hat I gave her almost immediately.

You can give them clothes and if they like it they'll add it to their outfit rotation.
If they REALLY like it it replaces their default - Goose didn't wear his flowery shirt once after I gave him a checkered coat

Just hand them clothes face-to-face. They will mostly wear what you gave them unless they are working out, or it's raining.

I gave Lolly a Kimono and a Red bow, and she wears it almost every time I see her.

There may be a time limit though, as Ankha has opted to stop wearing her glasses.
