Is there a way to fix my villagers house?

Zell originally has two stools in his house but he replaced one with a random shirt. I want him to put the stool he replaced back exactly where it was before, but I can't just give one to him because he'll reject it saying he already has one. What can I do here?

I know, this problem is making me cringe! Sometimes villagers houses don't reflect them AT ALL, and I just want to CHANGE ALL OF IT!

There's not a lot you can do. Basically, either leave it as it is (mailing furniture will probably just make it worse), get rid of your villager and do the almighty 16-villager cycle (a little over-the-top) or just hack your town map (not recommended).

I think I'm going to try and mail it. Kind of answering my own question here, but I think if I remove the shirt from his house first then mail him the stool after, there will be a good chance that he will put it down in the empty spot where the shirt was. In my experience, whenever I'd give my villagers furniture for their house they would always place it on a spot where there used to be an item rather than replacing something else.

The other trick is waiting for them to ask for an item to put in their house, which guarantees that they'll use it.

Buy the shirt off him and then talk to him with only the stool in your pockets until he buys it off you or mail it to him. Actually, best bet is probably to put it up for sale in retail (after you've bought the shirt, clearing up the space that way you know exactly where its going to go) and then make sure he buys it the next time he's there.

So I mailed it to him today. His response in the letter was like "Sorry to break it to you but I already have that item" so I thought he didn't put it in his house. I had to reload like 10 times for him to be inside so I could take a look. The stool is there, right where I wanted it to be. Glad it worked because I didn't think it would after I saw his letter.

Villagers will say this whenever you send them a piece of furniture they had in their house originally. For example Rudy put his modern wood bed for sale in re-tail, I bought it and customized it before mailing it back to him, and he said he already had one! It was displayed the next day in his house though

You probably can do nothing at all. Unlike HHD, you can not remodel villagers homes, and getting him to do it himself would probably be super hard.
