is there a villager name u can't pronounce?

This thread is really funny to me as I'm a French native speaker. I play the game in French but I watch many videos in English and I can see that some people are really struggling with the "french style" names.
Chevre is the French word for goat so I recommand to try on google translate "chèvre" (in French) and you will know how to pronouce it.
Hippeux I would say "Hee-puh", I believe google translate can help as well.
I play in French so I don't have issues with the names but if I had to play in English my accent is so terrible that almost all names would be a struggle for me 😅

I can’t pronounce Deirdre which bothers me because she lives on my island. I feel bad that I can’t say her name.

this isn’t a villager name, but I also can’t pronounce rattan. I thought it rhymed with batten, but I heard someone else say it and it sounded different.

I have trouble saying a lot of names such cyd, hippeux, among those names; because I'm deaf...

as for étoile, i've always just said it how it's spelled while ignoring the é and pretending it's a normal e 😅
like eh-toil
that one took me a while to figure out since I don't know French but it's supposed to be pronounced "eh-twal" or something like that.

it's deer-dray :)

I pronounce:
  • Pekoe as "pay-koe";
  • Hippeux as "hip-<Dutch pronunciation for "eu" as in "beuk" (birch)>;
  • Merengue as "meh-rang-geh" (as if I'm speaking French);
  • Croque as "crock" (like in "croque monsieur");
  • Pancetti as "pan-chet-tee" (since I'm convinced that pancetta is pronounced "pan-chet-tah");
  • Deirdre as "deer-dree" (Google Translate also pronounces it that way so uh);
  • Cousteau as "coos-toe" (also as if I'm speaking French);
  • Beardo as "beard-oh";
  • Cyd as "Sid";
  • Tangy as "tan-jee" (or as in tangerine);
  • Tybalt as "tie-balt";
  • Étoile as "ay-twahl";
  • Chevre as "cheh-vruh"
and probably tons more :p
this is because english isn't my first language but i thought phoebe was pronounced "fobe" rather than"feebee"...... for a long time
I used to pronounce Phoebe as "foo-buh" before learning proper English. (My mother tongue is Dutch, so "oe" is always pronounced "oo" there.)

Yep, I think you got étoile quite right, the "é" is more or less "eh".
Merengue is not a French word by the way, the French word is "Meringue" and not "Merengue". I think this is a Spanish spelling, but as she (Merengue in AC) does look like the French pastry I would pronounce it the same way. And I don't know how to explain how to pronounce it, I recommend google tranlsate once again haha

Pekoe lives on my island, She is asleep right now but when she wakes up, I will ask her the proper pronunciation. If it means anything, I always addressed her as you pronounce it (two syllables) and she's never corrected me. Haha

There are several for me, but I am almost sure that I am saying them correctly.
One example is Tybalt. Is it Tibalt, or Tie-balt, or something else?
It's pronounced Tih-bult. It's a character from Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. :D

I say Deirdre as Deh-druh simply because I know someone named that and that’s the local pronunciation. I’m aware of how it’s supposed to be said in English 😂

To this day, I still don't know if Deirdre's name should be pronounced "Deer-dre" like how you say the word deer or "dheir-dre" almost like how you say the word there.

Tbh I've never really had a problem with most of the ones mentioned here besides Croque, because I always pronounced it cro-kay, but my friend pronounces it croak, which I think might actually be correct

I also struggled with Dobie at first, not knowing if it was doh-bee or dah-bee, but I think since it only has one B then it's the former

idk lol, I don't worry too much about the little animal dudes ; P

This thread kind of reminds me when I used to watch Atla and how I thought the character names were spelled entirely differently then how they actually are. When I finally saw the credits on one episode of season 1 (a long time ago) I realized how off I was with the spelling. I think I spelled Aang like Eeng or something lol.

As for Animal Crossing, I never really gave it much thought because most of my villagers have had fairly easy names for me to pronounce. Tangy, Kiki, Margie, Flora, Willow, Frita, Hazel, Butch, Buck, ect. They're not entirley that difficult with pronunciation.

Everyone here pronouncing it crokay or croak......I’m here pronouncing it croc ( like the crocs shoes without the -s at the end 😅 ).

He’s not even a crocodile...but that’s how I have always pronounced it.

Beau - Bo
Blanche - Blonsh (Correct me if I am wrong.)
Deirdre - Deer-dra
Jacques - Zhah-kuh (Think of the song Frère Jacques.)
Klaus - Clowss
Leif - Life
Portia - Like the car Porsche. The e is pronounced.
Wolfgang - Volf-gahng
Zucker - Tsoo-ker
