I let the experts in a given field use their knowledge to make decisions in their field. Scientists determined Pluto no longer fit the criteria - which had to be amended to better reflect the information available about Pluto and nearby bodies recently discovered which would have fit under the old requirements to be planets, too.. throwing a heck of a lot more out of whack than just the saying to recall planet names!

As we learn more, we naturally adapt our understanding to account for the new information. That's life *shrugs* and as an educator of young children, I see this as an excellent example of how learning never stops. And there is ALWAYS more to learn. I've no particular sentimental attachment to Pluto, anymore than I do for Neptune (so, none). Or what drs choose to categorise x,y,z as this year. They do their jobs, which they're good at, and I'll stick to doing my job which I'm good at. I adore learning about space and the incredible discoveries being made all the time.. but it's not personal to me.

I found the public outrage and campaigns to reinstate Pluto as an official planet utterly fascinating, but was not emotionally invested in any outcome, just curious about the debate occuring. The whole saga has been nothing short of captivating to me. It's hopefully sparked a lot more curiosity and interest in learning more in the long term, too, which is always good!

There are many excellent documentaries, books, and journal articles covering the "Pluto problem" as I've heard it frequently referred to. For anyone at all curious about exactly what went on with the decision making of this situation, there are plenty of credible sources available with just a quick google search.
