This has to do with the Town Tree being full grown (500 hours, 500 days). Just 500 hours is for the badge, which I have gotten.

It 100% for certain doesn't have to be 500 days. I got it in december or january (started playing in june) and I hadn't TT'd a single day.

I don't have a full grown tree, and I have not played 500 days, which DOES have to be done for the full grown tree.
I have played 500 hours and got the badge without any issue.

Note for those without a 500 hour badge
If you play for example 400 hours on one 3ds and 100 on another, it doesnt count. Clearing that up.
