title. I'm wondering if theres a better chance of them wearing gifted clothes if they already put the original gifted clothes on display, or will there still be a chance that they display the 2nd one too

When Bluebear was still on my island, I had gifted her two blue bows, and she wore them each once then displayed both in her room, haha.

From my experience, villagers who put clothes on display tend to wear them sometimes, but not all the time. I don't know how effective it would be to gift them another clothing piece, but I guess that may boost the chances of them wearing it? Can't say for sure, but it's so random how villagers choose to wear clothing you have gifted them.

What I can share is that if they replace the displayed clothing with something new (say a furniture piece) the clothes will definitely be worn still/again.

Example:
Katt displayed an outfit, then replaced it with the guitar I gifted her and has now been wearing it a lot!

For me Sherb has threw out his adorable furniture in order to display the halos given to him as a gift TTvTT I gifted him 2 of them because he looks so cute in it, but he's only worn them once, when I gifted him directly. At this point his house is gonna be full of halos ¯\_( ツ )_/¯

My (very, very spoiled) Bunnie tends to display a random piece of clothing every day in her open furniture slot, usually the most recent one I've gifted her. This happens whether the style is a perfect/partial match for her or not. It doesn't stop her from wearing it in the future, and she's never used more than one slot (next to her television) to display clothes.

My friend IRL who similarly spoils his Dotty reported that she uses two slots to display clothing -- but that's it, no more than two. So I imagine that each given villager house has a certain number of slots to use for this. At least with the most recent version of the game, they aren't going to suddenly replace all of their real furniture with new clothes.

Villagers are so great. Who gets a new shirt and thinks "I'm gonna throw out my bed so I can display this shirt on a mannequin in its place."
