yes, i think its fine. unless your a vegetarian or vegan, you cant really say tagging is cruel when you eat animals loll

Not really. If we are doing it for the good of the population (protecting endangered species, etc.), then it's not too bad. It's kinda like getting a vaccine, we endure a small amount of pain (sometimes unwillingly) in order to protect not only ourselves but the overall population.

Basically what Fleshy said. While it's kind of "cruel" in the sense that you're hurting an animal for even 2 seconds, it's usually done for their protection so. I guess it's both cruel and uncruel? Idk.

What

Im sure shots hurt, too, but I wouldn't call vaccinations cruel.

but wouldn't it be cruel to pierce a humans ear without their permission? (eg. a babies ear?) to me that's what makes it debatable, rather than the pain. But yes, pain-wise it isn't usually a significant amount of pain.
I got mine pierced at 6 months. It's not cruel.

I think in most situations, it's more for the animal's safety than anything else. It's not like docking a doberman or pit bull's ears for fighting. People tag livestock so if they wander off, they're marked. They tag research animals so if they get out or get mixed up, there's information readily handy. Things like microchips are also a form of tagging, and are simple injections that implant it in the animal's skin so if they're picked up by a shelter, the people there know the animal is registered to a home.

So it's not very pleasant to think about animals being forced to endure the moment of pain and discomfort in having their ear tagged or having chips implanted into them, but it's rarely, if ever, for any reason other than to make the animal safer.

And let me be honest. Tagging a cow's ear should have the same moral issues as piercing a child's ear before they're old enough consent to it. I was six months old. And I don't really care. Have you ever spent time with a cow? A minute after the tag, they don't care, either.

Edit: Something else that struck me. Some shelters and vet clinics tag cats' ears to mark that they've been spayed or neutered, and these are almost always strays. This is to ensure that if the animal is picked up again, one can immediately determine that the cat is already fixed. This way, a cat doesn't have to endure a panic-filled car ride to a strange place and be shaved down again... Only to, at best, find out it has scars, and at worst, be opened up again for no reason. A little nick in the ear can save a poor cat a LOT of stress in the long run.

For me, it depends on how you tag animals. Intentions would vary. Some could be in a very positive way or a kind of discipline but be sure it should not harm or hurt them.

I don't think it is cruel. I'm sure it hurts initially but it doesn't debilitate the animal at all and in the long run there is a lot to be benefited from both parties.

It Was Just A Statement. And If You Want To Quote Me Will You Quote The Whole Thing? Its Not Right To Cut Out Parts Of My Words.

A bit random, but are you Kanya?

Also, my thoughts are basically the same as FelshyBro's. Justified cruelty, I guess you could say.

"tag" isnt specified as in what kind of tag.

dog tag on the collar?
cow tag pinched on the ear?
tag as in branded with a hot iron?

i really don't know exactly which tag your talking about. but when pepole say tag an animal i usually take it as cows or birds being tagged to keep captivity.

.

i think its cruel when they get like their ears pierced so i voted yes. cows and other animals are not just simply object and property and profit tools but living beings smh. and i honestly dont think that living beings like birds like having a ring around their feet. i know i would hate it.
i also dont agree with piercing like a baby girls ears. who knows if the kid turns out to hate earrings or turn out to be transgender and never wanted them in the first place. it shouldnt be allowed to do body modifications on any animal or human baby.

I don't think it's cruel to tag animals. The information provided from tagging is invaluable to research that can help with conservation efforts.

If we're talking about tagging an ear (i.e. cows) again, no I don't think it's cruel.
