Is it 9 or 12 bushes in a row?

Can you plant a mximum of 9 or 12 bushes/trees connecting before they die? for some reason I keep thinking it's 9, but acnlwiki, ign, gamefaqs and some other places say 12, if it is 12, that opens up new worlds of landscaping for me.
Just making sure, since I really hate wasting bushes and cedars.
