female bc i know some dakotas and they're girls but i guess it can be used for a boy too

i always thought dakota was a female name o.o didnt know it could be used on males too coz all the dakotas i know are all females

well in SG, dakota is the name of a train station.

I've only ever really heard of female Dakota's (first thought is the girl who played in The Golden Compass), although to be honest I've not seen many Dakota's anyway.

any name can be gender neutral, but dakota sounds more feminine to me. perhaps it just because it ends with an 'a,' like most gender neutral names either sound more manly or more feminine

Well I actually know somebody named Dakota and she's a girl, so I'd say a girl, but I don't know if it's unisex.

I won't be voting in the poll, as I do see it fits both ways (Too bad there is no 'both' option.)

I used to have a friend named Dakota (female) - And I've met a few other girls with the name. I met one guy named Dakota, but I definitely think female every time I hear it at first.

It sounds like more of an American name so I honestly don't know, because I don't know of anyone with that name! But I think it sounds more feminine, anyway.

I just sort of associated it with female because Dakota Fanning. But it sounds fine either way.
