Is catching a gar hard?

So I'm down to the gar and blowfish (and the nibble fish because I accidentally sold the one I caught to Rosie so it's not in my museum -___-)
And although I believe my game is set in the right time, I can't catch a gar. I don't even think I've seen a shadow large enough to be a gar. So anyway. Did you have trouble? Did anything make it easier?
Same with the blowfish considering when I did have my time set to do that, it was hard as well. But this is mainly about the gar

[sub]the gar is probably as rare as marlins, tunas, etc. it's pretty dang rare, and you need to have fast reflexes, since it swims away fast.

honestly there is no "cheat" to fishing and bug-hunting that i know of. you just sort of need to stalk the waters until something spawns. i definitely had trouble with the rarer fish, but i always got them eventually. the blowfish is rare, but i had an easier time with it.

Not like cheats, but for the salmons since they stay in one spot I used the save and continue trick until I caught both. Which is sort of a cheat I guess but I dunno. The gar is so annoying though. Ugh. The last few fish / bugs / diving things suck
