I literally just unlocked the terraforming tool and I've already whipped out a sketchbook to plan the layout so I don't mess anything up 😂

I've already put down a lot of custom designs as paths as I didn't think I'd get the tool this soon, so those are gonna be a pain to pull up, but I'm so exited to make my dream island at last!!

i am!! i have two notes on my phone currently - one for house room ideas and another for landscape ideas!

I said I wasn’t going to plan anything but I wish I’d made a rough draft now. I’m no where near spontaneously creative enough to think of an idea right off the bat!

If only I was so organized!! I've been going back and forth through my accounts to see what landscape ideas I've liked - its a mess!

I'm not doing any major planning making it up as I go mostly aha. But when I unlocked terraforming I knew I wanted to change part of my river as I had come to dislike it I got a bit stumped about how so I took a photo of my map with my phone and then drew on the picture. Pretty happy with how the change came out! Yesterday I started considering changing another area of the river and I did the same thing on my phone but not 100% sure I want to go through with it or not.

Gosh I'm the same 😂 I know if I made any change I'd end up going back to it about 5 times because I wasn't happy with it! Trying to prevent that with the draft though, it's gonna take a loooong while

Oh thats a good idea, I hadn't thought of that! I do want to keep some of my existing layout just in a different place, so I'll probably do that to make sure it changes properly

Hahaha yes!! I'm actually kinda excessive with this and spent like 3 hours restarting my game so I would get an island with a shape I was happy with! (And an airport color I liked, and cool first villagers....)
Now I have sketches of my town laying around where I try and visualize how I want the rivers and all haha! I have some definite plans and some rough ideas that I write down too.
I'm actually a bit frustrated that terraforming only comes as a reward for a 5 star island since to me terraforming is essential to get my island to look the way I want it to look, so what would be in my mind a "5star island" couldn't happen before I'm able to terraform.... But it also adds a bit of a challenge and durability in a way since I have to work on my island for now so I get to 5 star, then I'll probably scrap most of it and destroy all bridges and inclined to terraform haha

I actually take a screenshot of my map, then put a piece of paper on top of my screen so I can draw the outlines in pencil and then draw my plans on it....

A day or two after getting terraforming I started working on my island. I turned it into a wasteland and leveled everything. No trees. No rivers. No cliffs. It’s hard for me to shape it into what I envisioned if I don’t start with a blank space. I don’t have some grand plan on it though, I’m planning to keep it as simple and practical as I can and as open as it originally was. I don’t like living somewhere that has a super complicated map. I just wanna do my dailies effectively but I want it to be pretty, not extravagant. I’ve been several days into working on it and so far has finished work on some parts and it’s now very very slowly coming along. :) If I’m being honest though there were times I wanted to give up. Lol. But I persevered.

It’s a reward for a 3* island, not 5*

Honestly, I'm just going with the flow right now. In New Leaf I planned my town out to a T and, while I loved how it looked by the end of it, it honestly made the game more stressful for me than anything. Just starting up New Horizons started to make me feel stressed at the beginning so I just decided to decorate as I go along and let things happen how they may. Maybe when I start getting bored I'll re-do everything and make plans and all that, but for now I'm just enjoying myself.

that, but for now I'm just enjoying myself.
Whatever makes the game more relaxing for you! I'm trying not to stress about it too much, its fun to just draw things out. My NL town wasn't customized at all, I think I had only one bridge down? So I'm trying to switch it up with this game!

That's dedication, I don't know if I could level everything - I chopped down about 10 trees and that was too much for me! I've seen a lot of people with very intricate maps, with jumping puzzles and different levels, and I don't think I'd have the patience for that 😅 I just want to make somewhere that would be cool to live IRL!

Yep! My changes are quite minimal (and I made some of them freehand) but I do have a rough plan in mind. I used the GitHub Happy Island Designer (x) because it allows you to trace your own island map and make changes that way. I doubt I'll follow my own plan to the letter, but it's nice to have all my ideas in one reference.
I find I do this with other games too like Stardew Valley and its map designer :p

YOU ARE A GODSEND! I WAS DRAWING MY MAY OUT BY HAND! THIS IS INCREDIBLE!!! Thank you so much!!
I do the same thing on stardew too, but with that its more to ensure maaaaaaaaaximuuuuuuuuuum efficiency with my sprinkler layouts haha!

I'm taking it slowly. I like the island looking a bit wild, with trees, grass and flowers everywhere, and no straight rivers. I'll put some paths, some ramps, and after that I will see. Right now I'm OK with just my 3 stars.

I just measured everything in-game and laid out my paths accordingly. Deciding for a layout was pretty easy for me because I like things to be neat, but I have no idea how to decorate the leftover spaces and such. I'm not good at all those little things.

I plan everything as I'm doing it and then regret it later because theres not enough room to do something else in the area lol

It's working out okay for me so far. I never really was a planner.

I'm working really hard on it but not planning anything out. I'll start working on one thing then get an idea for another area so run off and start on that. I was trying to concerntrate on one square on the map at a time and do it that way.

I can't tell you how many times I have settled on a river layout and then gone back and covered it all in again.

Trial and error atm.
