So lucklily, I started up with a new save file to make sure I didn't miss any spot to put a path, and see where Stinky moved. I left only one 4x3 spot. Turns out, it doesn't count the doorway as on a path, I guess because there's no house yet, so they'll move onto a 3x3 spot. I have to TT to the previous day which I don't like to do, and lay down more patterns.

Does this work? I heard it mentioned before so I put a few random patterns in my fruit orchid, but I'm not sure if it is doing anything.

Yes it works, I've done it with 3 villagers so far. They will only plot in spaces where there's no patterns
I had to go back and redo spots where I've missed, I've now covered everywhere and Dobie was much easier to move in as a result

sprinkle did plot on a path once but only once (i did have available spaces to plot)
