The egg decorating contest is back! Join TBT’s Fifth Egg Decorating Contest, now with two distinct categories: decorating and painting. Entries must be submitted by April 9th.
Starting this Friday at 7PM EDT, follow clues to search for eggs around the forum in TBT's Thirteenth Annual Easter Egg Hunt. New eggs will appear throughout the weekend and the hunt ends on April 6th!

There's also a letter some villagers send you when they leave, mentioning 'new leaf'. The mayor also says in one of the events that if he ever retires, you will be the next mayor.
Not to ruin your moment, but the phrase "turn over a new leaf" is very common and thus I wouldn't say "new leaf" being used in earlier Animal Crossing games is of any significance.
I think this is purely coincidence, but I can see how you'd get spooked by it. I do like that it's part of the dialogue in game though. Who knows if Nintendo could've been inspired by that or not, they do look to some of their older games for inspiration/references a lot.
